”Sophia, why did you and your family want to kiIII Genevieve?”
The words hit the room like a physical blow. Genevieve’s dad froze, his eyes moving between the young boy and Sophia. Sophia herself felt like the ground was shaking. She couldn’t breathe.
“What? What are you saying? I love Genevieve! She is my sister!”
The young Mad boy—Jerimont—stood up slowly. He didn’t look like a beggar anymore. He looked like a judge. He walked over to a bowl of water and looked into it.
“The grave does not belong to Genevieve,” Jerimont said, his voice cold. “That grave belongs to Sophia’s family. It has been waiting for a long time.”
Jerimont looked at Sophia’s family history through the spirit. “Years ago, Sophia’s mother was in deep trouble. She owed a woman a huge amount of money. Instead of paying the debt, she chose a dark path. She kiIIIed that woman to silence her. But you cannot silence the dead.”
“The woman she kiIIIed has been hunting your family for years,” Jerimont continued, ignoring her cries. “She wants Sophia’s life to pay for the mother’s sin. But then, Genevieve entered the picture. You two became so close that you started doing everything together. You even started eating from the same plate.”
Genevieve’s dad gasped. “Yes! They are always eating together. They are inseparable.”
“That was the mistake,” Jerimont said. “The angry spirit became confused. Because you share everything, the spirit started mistaking Genevieve for Sophia. When the spirit sees Genevieve, it sees the daughter of the woman who killed her. That is why the grave drawings were appearing to her. I was trying to warn her to stay away, but the more I warned, the closer you two became.”
Genevieve’s dad fell to his knees. Tears were streaming down his face. “Please! My daughter must not diè for another person’s sin! It is not fair! She is innocent! Jerimont, you are a powerful boy, please. How are we going to rescue Sophia and my daughter too? We cannot let them both go!”
Sophia was also on the floor, shaking. The truth was too heavy. She remembered her mother’s strange behavior whenever people talked about the past. She remembered how her mother suddenly hated Genevieve.
It wasn’t because Genevieve was cursed—it was because her mother saw the spirit following Genevieve and knew her secret was coming out.
“The spirit is already at the hospital,” Jerimont said. “It is sitting on Genevieve’s chest, waiting for the 48 hours to finish so it can take her soul to the gráve.”
“Please help us!” Genevieve’s dad cried. “I will give you anything! Just save my only child!”
Jerimont looked at them for a long time. The anger in his face turned into a small, mysterious smile. It wasn’t a happy smile, but the smile of someone who was ready for a fight.
“I will not take your money,” Jerimont said. “But we must move fast. The clock is ticking.”
“What do we do?” Sophia asked, wiping her eyes.
“Take me to your house,” Jerimont ordered. “Not Genevieve’s house. Take me to your mother’s house. The root of the problem is there. If we don’t uproot it there, Genevieve will never wake up, and Sophià, you will be next.”
Genevieve’s dad jumped up. “Our car is outside! Let’s go!”
