My name is Emily Carter. I’m thirty-two years old and I live in a quiet suburb near Boston. A few years ago, anyone who knew my family would have said we were the picture of a perfect marriage.
My husband, Daniel Carter, was successful, kind, and respected by almost everyone who met him. He worked in real estate and earned a very comfortable income. People admired his calm personality and his ability to take care of his family.
Many friends told me I was lucky to marry a man like him.
For many years, I believed that too.
Daniel and I met in college. He pursued me for almost a year before I finally agreed to date him. Every evening he would drive me around the lake near campus, buy me a cup of hot coffee, and sit with me for hours talking about life.
The day he proposed, he knelt down in the small square in front of a church, holding a diamond ring in his trembling hand.
“Emily, I want you to be my wife,” he said.
I cried.
Not because I was surprised.
But because I was happy.
After we got married, life was peaceful. Daniel worked hard while I worked as an editor for a small local magazine. Our income was stable, and we built a comfortable life together.
Two years later, I gave birth to our first daughter.
We named her Sophia.
The day Sophia was born, Daniel held her in his arms and his eyes turned red with emotion.
“Our daughter is beautiful,” he whispered.
At that moment, I believed every word.
The first few years of parenthood were exhausting but joyful. Daniel often came home early to play with Sophia, carrying her around the backyard and teaching her how to walk.
Watching them together, I truly thought my happiness would last forever.
Three years later, I became pregnant again.
That was when I first noticed something different about Daniel.
One evening, as I gently placed my hand on my belly and said I hoped the baby would be another sweet little girl, Daniel stayed silent for a long moment.
Then he asked quietly,
“Don’t you want a son?”
I looked at him, surprised.
“A child is a child. As long as the baby is healthy.”
Daniel forced a small smile.
“I just thought… it might be nice to have a boy.”
At the time, I didn’t think much of it. All I cared about was having a healthy baby.
But when I gave birth to our second daughter, everything began to change.
Her name was Lily.
Daniel was at the hospital when she was born, but the excitement on his face was gone.
My mother-in-law, Margaret, stood beside the hospital bed and sighed softly.
“Another girl…”
She didn’t say anything else, but her expression said enough.
After Lily’s birth, my health became much weaker.
The doctor warned me that it would be dangerous for me to get pregnant again.
After many sleepless nights thinking about it, I decided to have my tubes tied.
When I told Daniel, he stayed silent for a long time.
“Are you sure?” he asked.
“Yes. Two children are enough.”
He didn’t argue.
But from that day on, something in his eyes grew colder.
When Lily turned one year old, I started noticing clear changes in Daniel.
He came home late more often.
His phone was always locked.
Sometimes he looked at me as if I were a stranger.
I suspected something, but I kept trying to reassure myself.
Until one evening.
Daniel was in the shower and had left his phone on the table.
The screen suddenly lit up.
A message appeared.
“I miss you.”
The sender’s name was Jessica.
My heart began to pound.
I picked up the phone.
Just a few minutes of reading the messages were enough for me to understand everything.
Daniel was having an affair.
That night, I said nothing.
I simply lay beside him, staring at the ceiling until morning.
When Daniel turned and hugged me like he always did, his body felt unfamiliar.
But I stayed silent.
For my daughters.
I told myself:
Maybe it’s just temporary.
Maybe he’ll get bored.
Maybe he’ll come back to us.
Daniel still took care of the children. He still provided money for the household. He still spoke to me normally.
So I chose to endure it.
But there was someone who didn’t want me to stay silent.
Her name was Jessica Miller.
Jessica started texting me.
At first, it was just sarcastic comments.
Then she began sending photos of her and Daniel together.
In one photo, Daniel had his arm around her waist in front of a hotel mirror.
In another, they were lying side by side in bed.
Jessica wrote:
“Do you see how happy your husband looks?”
I stared at the message for a long time.
Finally I replied,
“What do you want?”
Jessica answered immediately.
“I want him.”
I asked her to meet me.
We chose a café in the city center.
Jessica arrived first.
She was a few years younger than me, with blonde hair and bold makeup.
When she saw me walking in, she smirked.
“So you’re Daniel’s wife?”
I sat down across from her.
“You should stop this.”
Jessica laughed.
“You think you can keep him?”
Before I could say anything else, Daniel called me.
He had found out that I was meeting Jessica.
His voice sounded panicked.
“Emily, please. Don’t make this a big deal.”
“Where are you?”
“I’m on my way.”
Daniel arrived at the café and pulled me outside.
He almost dropped to his knees in front of me.
“Emily, I made a mistake. I only meant for it to be a short fling.”
I looked at him.
“Really?”
“I swear.”
He grabbed my hands.
“Give me one more chance.”
For a brief moment, I wanted to believe him.
But three days later, I overheard a conversation that shattered everything.
Daniel was talking to his mother in the living room.
I was standing behind the door.
“I’m seeing four women at the same time,” Daniel said.
My body went numb.
“Four?” his mother asked.
Daniel replied calmly,
“I just need one son.”
My heart dropped.
He continued,
“If one of them gives birth to a boy, I’ll support her. When the child grows up, I’ll bring him home.”
His mother asked,
“What about Emily?”
Daniel scoffed.
“She won’t dare to divorce me.”
I stood there, unable to breathe.
At that exact moment, my phone vibrated.
A message from Jessica.
“I have good news.”
A photo of a pregnancy test.
Two red lines.
Jessica added another message:
“I’m pregnant with your husband’s child.”
I stared at the screen.
Then I laughed.
Two days later, I asked Jessica to meet me again.
This time the café was quieter.
Jessica arrived with a proud expression.
She placed her hand on her belly.
“You already know.”
I nodded.
“Congratulations.”
Jessica smirked.
“So what will you do now? Divorce him?”
I didn’t answer.
Instead, I took a photo out of my bag and placed it on the table.
Jessica looked at the picture.
The smile slowly disappeared from her face.
It was a screenshot of messages.
Messages between Daniel and another woman.
Her name was Ashley.
In the message, Ashley wrote:
“I’m pregnant too.”
Daniel replied:
“If it’s a boy, I’ll marry you.”
Jessica’s face turned pale.
“W… what is this?”
I shrugged.
“My husband is seeing four women at the same time.”
She froze.
I continued calmly,
“You’re lucky to be pregnant.”
I tapped the photo.
“But someone else has the same good news.”
Jessica’s hands trembled.
“I… I don’t believe this.”
I smiled slightly.
“Right now there are two pregnant women.”
“Of course, there are still two others.”
“They might get pregnant soon too.”
Jessica stood there, speechless.
I looked straight into her eyes.
“But if you don’t give birth to a son, do you really think he’ll keep you?”
She couldn’t say a word.
Her face turned completely pale.
I stood up.
Then I said my final sentence.
“I just want you to know… you’re not special.”
And I walked away.
Through the café window, I saw Jessica frantically grabbing her phone.
She was probably calling Daniel.
Three days later, I filed for divorce.
Daniel panicked when he received the papers.
He rushed to the house and knocked repeatedly.
“Emily! We need to talk!”
I stood in the living room.
Sophia and Lily were playing on the floor.
I looked at my daughters.
Then I opened the door.
Daniel looked at me with red eyes.
“I made a mistake.”
I shook my head.
“Did you only make one?”
He said nothing.
I spoke slowly.
“You didn’t just betray me.”
“You betrayed our family.”
Daniel lowered his head.
I closed the door.
He stood outside for a long time.
But I never turned back.
That night, Sophia ran to hug me.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Are you sad?”
I hugged her tightly.
“No.”
I looked at my two daughters.
And for the first time in a long time…
I felt free.
Because sometimes…
Just one photo…
Is enough to destroy every lie.
