My husband took me to a party with his mistress, completely unaware that I was the CEO of his rival company. They expected me to show up in a rather old-fashioned dress, but what they saw the moment I stepped out of the car left them speechless…
Winter in Manhattan always brings a biting chill, but the real cold was reigning right inside the luxurious penthouse I once called “home.”
“Remember to wear that burgundy velvet dress, Evelyn. Tonight’s party is very important to me, and I need you to look… well, modest and dignified.”
Marcus, my husband, adjusted his Armani silk tie in front of the mirror, not even bothering to look at me once. He was talking about the outdated dress I wore five years ago, a design that made me look a decade older and blend in with the crowd.
“Will Chloe be coming with us?” I spoke in a calm voice, my hand still flipping through the business magazine.
Marcus paused slightly, a fleeting look of confusion in his eyes reflected in the mirror. “Of course. She’s my executive assistant. Vanguard Corporation is preparing to welcome a major investor, and Chloe needs to be there to sort out the paperwork. Don’t be unreasonably jealous tonight, Evelyn. I beg you.”
Jealous? I almost laughed. It had been six months since I discovered the flirtatious text messages and expensive hotel bills sent to Marcus’s secondary credit card. He and Chloe—the young, hot, blonde assistant—had been seeing each other right under my nose. He thought I was a dutiful housewife, a submissive woman living off his mid-level manager salary at Vanguard Innovations. He brought me to the ultimate New York high-society party tonight, solely to serve as a perfect cover, a dreary, boring wife to set up the allure of his young mistress.
They thought I knew nothing. But they were wrong. They had absolutely no idea that the woman they were mocking was actually the one holding their entire lives in her hands.
“Okay,” I replied softly. “You and Chloe go ahead to the Waldorf Astoria. I need to stop by the dry cleaner to pick up that burgundy dress. I’ll take a taxi later.”
Marcus breathed a sigh of relief, threw me a half-smile, and left the room. As the lock clicked, I tossed the magazine down on the table. The cover featured the logo of Aegis Dynamics—the tech giant dominating Silicon Valley and the East Coast, Vanguard’s arch-rival and greatest nightmare.
At the top of the article was the headline: “The mysterious founder of E.V. finally revealed after a billion-dollar deal.”
E.V.
Evelyn Vance.
That’s my maiden name. My real name. And I am the CEO of Aegis Dynamics.
The Transformation Before the Big Moment
Seven years ago, when Marcus and I had just gotten married, I was pregnant with our first child. It was also the time I was developing a revolutionary AI algorithm for data encryption. But then, a terrible car accident took the baby from my womb. While I was sinking into the depths of despair and depression, Marcus secretly stole my algorithm blueprints and submitted them to Vanguard Innovations under his name. Thanks to it, he got promoted and celebrated. And when I discovered the truth, he manipulated me psychologically, spreading rumors to everyone that I was insane because of the loss of my child.
But Marcus didn’t know that the algorithm he stole was just a flawed draft. I swallowed my tears, silently leaving home for a month for “psychological treatment,” but in reality, flying to the West Coast to meet Julian—a brilliant former classmate—to co-found Aegis Dynamics.
For the past seven years, I’ve lived two lives. By day, I was the bland housewife Evelyn Sterling, running a billion-dollar company through multi-layered coding meetings in my bedroom. By night, I stood in the shadows, watching Marcus’s Vanguard struggle, reeling from the flaws in the very flawed algorithm he’d stolen. And tonight, this game of hide-and-seek will officially end.
I opened the closet, glanced at the old burgundy dress, and pulled the zipper of a jet-black storage bag. Inside was a masterpiece by Elie Saab: a jet-black haute couture evening gown adorned with thousands of sparkling crystals like the night sky, a high slit revealing my long, slender legs, paired with fiery red Louboutin heels.
I applied heavy makeup, a wine-red lipstick, and styled my jet-black hair in an updo, revealing a proud five-million-dollar blue diamond necklace around my neck—a gift Julian gave me to celebrate the company’s successful IPO.
I looked in the mirror. No longer a submissive wife. This was the Queen of Silicon Valley.
My phone vibrated. A message from Julian: “The car is waiting downstairs. The Vanguard board has signed the papers. Tonight is your stage.”
I smiled and walked out the door.
The Priceless Silence
The grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria hotel was filled with crystal chandeliers and champagne.
The room was filled with the murmur of the stream and the boisterous laughter of the elite. In a corner, Marcus stood beside Richard Thorne—CEO of Vanguard. Right next to Marcus was none other than Chloe. She wore a dazzling, daringly cut red silk dress, constantly leaning against Marcus’s arm, whispering and giggling seductively. Several of Marcus’s colleagues exchanged meaningful glances.
“Are you sure your wife will be here?” Chloe pouted, taking a sip of wine. “I’m really curious to see what she looks like. You said she usually wears clothes bought at discount stores?”
Marcus chuckled: “She’s a bit slow and conservative. Just act naturally later. Her dishevelment will only highlight your beauty tonight, my goddess.”
Just then, the murmuring in the hall suddenly subsided, then fell silent completely.
The upper-class crowd—a group of arrogant and boisterous people—automatically parted, creating a grand passageway extending from the main entrance. Astonished glances and gasps of surprise filled the air.
I stepped through the gilded doorway, my heels clicking proudly and echoing on the marble floor. My crystal-embellished black dress caught every light in the room, making me the most dazzling focal point. The blue diamond around my neck blinded the ladies standing nearby. Following closely behind me was Julian—in his elegant tuxedo—and his entourage of four legal assistants in sharp black suits.
I proceeded straight toward the center of the hall, where Marcus and Chloe stood frozen.
Marscus’s face was ashen. His glass of wine slipped and shattered on the floor. Chloe gasped, her eyes blinking in disbelief at what she was seeing. Her glamorous red dress suddenly seemed cheap and tacky in comparison to the absolute elegance of the haute couture I was wearing.
“Evelyn…?” Marcus stammered, his voice hoarse. “What… what the hell is this? This dress… Where did you get the money for it? And who are these people?”
I stopped a meter away from him, not even glancing at Chloe. I smirked, a cold smile on my face:
“Good evening, Marcus. That burgundy dress was torn by rats, so I had to wear this instead. Looks alright?”
“You’re crazy!” Marcus hissed through clenched teeth, stepping forward to grab my wrist, trying to save face in front of the bosses. “You’re making a fool of yourself! How much did it cost to rent all this? Did you steal my credit card? Take it off and go home!”
But before his hand could touch me, Julian stepped forward, forcefully pushing Marcus’s hand away, causing him to stumble back a few steps.
“Keep your distance, Mr. Sterling,” Julian said coldly. “You have no right to touch our CEO.”
“CEO?!” Marcus and Chloe exclaimed in unison.
Just then, Richard Thorne—CEO of Vanguard—hurry past Marcus. Ignoring his mid-level employee, he extended both hands toward me with an incredibly subservient and respectful attitude.
“Mr. Vance! My goodness, you’ve arrived! It’s an immense honor for Vanguard to welcome the founder of Aegis Dynamics. Thank you for agreeing to this merger.”
A resounding gasp echoed through the hall. All eyes turned to me in utter astonishment. “Is this the mysterious E.V.?” “A young woman like this?”
Marcus’s face was a vivid picture of horror, shock, and despair. He glanced from CEO Thorne, to me, then back to Julian, his brain seemingly refusing to process the information. “Mr… Mr. Vance? Richard, you’re mistaken, this is my wife Evelyn… an unemployed woman…”
Richard Thorne frowned, glaring at Marcus with annoyance: “Sterling, shut your mouth. You’re humiliating us in front of the company’s new chairman. Ms. Evelyn Vance is the one who just spent a billion dollars to buy out all of Vanguard two hours ago.”
Marcus staggered, his legs giving way, and he had to grab onto the table beside him to keep from falling. Chloe recoiled in fear, trying to hide behind others to avoid being noticed.
I smiled, took the champagne glass from the waiter, and spoke clearly enough for the entire banquet hall to hear:
“Thank you, Richard. Actually, Mr. Sterling isn’t lying. I am his wife. Or rather… soon to be his ex-wife.”
The Twist in the Dark
Silence enveloped the room. Everyone held their breath, watching the drama unfold.
“Evelyn… I don’t understand…” Marcus trembled, tears welling up. “What’s going on? If you’re the CEO… why would you let me live like this? Why…”
I gestured to Julian. He opened his briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of documents, and threw them onto the table in front of Marcus.
“Because, Marcus,” my voice rang out, cold and sharp as a razor blade. “Seven years ago, when I lost our child and was lying on my deathbed, you stole my encryption algorithm. You used it to advance your career at Vanguard, turning me into a lunatic in everyone’s eyes to cover up your crime. I spent seven years building Aegis from scratch, just waiting for this moment.”
“Today.”
The crowd gasped. CEO Richard Thorne turned pale, glaring at Marcus. “Sterling… you stole the technology? My God, no wonder our system keeps crashing!”
“No! Slander! She’s lying!” Marcus yelled frantically, turning to cling to Chloe. “Chloe, you know me, right? Tell them! You’re my witness!”
Chloe looked at Marcus. The flirtatious expression vanished completely from her face. Instead, a cold, professional smile appeared. She pushed Marcus’s hand away and confidently strode… to stand right behind me.
“What the hell are you doing, Chloe?!” Marcus yelled.
“I’m sorry, Sterling,” Chloe calmly replied. “My real name is Chloe Adams, a corporate audit detective planted by Aegis Dynamics.” My task over the past year has been to gather all evidence of Vanguard’s unauthorized use of the stolen algorithm, as well as his embezzlement of public funds. “Every ‘intimate’ text message, every hotel bill… all of it was documentation I submitted to the FBI and kept for my boss’s divorce case.”
That was the final, final blow. A twist that shattered all the illusions of the treacherous man. The hot mistress he boasted about was, in fact, the sword drawn by his wife to end his life.
Marcus collapsed onto the marble floor. He covered his face and sobbed like a child, his arrogance and contempt for me shattered into pieces.
I walked closer to him, the slow, rhythmic clicking of my heels. The entire hall held its breath. Everyone thought I would trample him, that I would call the police to arrest him right there.
But when I looked down at the trembling, pathetic man at my feet, I suddenly felt a strange serenity. The fire of hatred that had consumed me for seven years… suddenly died out. It no longer mattered. The picture I was standing in was too grand, and Marcus was just a tiny speck of dust in my world.
I bent down and placed a white envelope in front of him.
“What is this?” Marcus looked up, his eyes filled with despair and fear. “An arrest warrant? Or a lawsuit for damages?”
“It’s a signed divorce petition,” I replied, my voice softening, devoid of anger, replaced by the calmness of someone who had truly let go. “And a one-way plane ticket to Seattle, along with an account sufficient for you to live in seclusion for the next few years. I’ve bought out Vanguard, so Vanguard won’t sue you.” “I won’t hand over the files to the FBI either.”
Marcus froze. The crowd murmured in astonishment.
“Why?” Marcus sobbed. “You ruined my life… You deserve to go to jail… Why would I let you off?”
I sighed softly, my gaze sweeping across the opulent ballroom, then turning to Julian—who was giving me a warm, proud look.
“Because, Marcus,” I said softly, the sound echoing in my own heart. “Taking revenge on a fallen man doesn’t make me any more noble. Keeping you in my mind only taints the world I’ve worked so hard to build. Seven years ago, you stole my algorithm, but you inadvertently gave me a chance at rebirth. If you hadn’t cruelly pushed me into the abyss, I would forever remain a withered rose in a crimson dress, face buried against the four walls of my home.” Today, I forgive you, not because you deserve it, but because I deserve to be free.
Tears streamed down Marcus’s face. They were tears of utter remorse, of someone who realized he had lost a priceless diamond chasing after pebbles along the roadside. He trembled as he took the divorce papers, bowing deeply to the floor as a final apology.
I turned and walked away. Without a glance back.
The hall parted, making way for the true queen. As I stepped out of the Waldorf Astoria hotel doors, the New York night sky seemed clearer than ever, the first snowflakes of the season sparkling like shattered crystal.
Julian approached, gently draping his fur coat over my shoulders to ward off the cold. He took my hand—a firm grip, conveying the warmth and absolute trust I had long lost.
“You did well, Evelyn,” Julian whispered. “This empire belongs to you.” “You. This sky is yours. Finally, you’re free.”
I looked up at him, flashing the brightest smile I’d had in seven years. Tears of happiness streamed down my cheeks, carrying away the last vestiges of the past. My new life, alongside those who truly cherished me, was now officially beginning. The Maybach sped through the night, leaving behind false illusions, carrying me toward a future brimming with light.
