My name is Emily Carter. If you had asked me a year ago whether my marriage was happy, I would have answered immediately: Yes. Without the slightest hesitation.

My husband, Daniel Carter, was the kind of man people instantly liked. He was tall, polite, and had a way of speaking that made others feel respected. We had been married for six years and lived in a fairly spacious two-story house in the suburbs of Boston.

Our life was comfortable. Daniel ran a small construction company, and I worked as an editor for a local magazine. We weren’t extremely rich, but we were stable. We could travel once a year, have dinner at restaurants on weekends, and put a little money into our joint savings account every month.

Three months ago, because Daniel’s work had become busier and busier, we decided to hire a part-time housekeeper.

Her name was Lily Thompson.

Lily was about twenty-three, with blonde hair and a slim figure. She said she had just moved from Ohio to Boston to look for work and was taking evening classes at a community college. Lily looked gentle and quiet. I felt sympathy for a young girl trying to live on her own in an expensive city like this, so I paid her $600 a week, a little more than the usual rate.

At first, everything seemed perfectly normal.

Lily cleaned the house neatly, cooked quite well, and was always polite. Daniel also praised her for working hard.

But then… strange things began to happen.

1

I’ve always been a light sleeper.

One night, around midnight, I woke up because I was thirsty.

I turned to the side. Daniel was still sleeping soundly.

I was about to go downstairs to the kitchen for a glass of water when I heard soft footsteps coming from the hallway downstairs.

At that moment, I assumed Lily was going down to get something to drink.

We had given her the small room at the back of the house so she could start cleaning early in the morning.

I didn’t think much about it.

But then… it happened again.

The second night.

Then the third.

Almost exactly at midnight, I would hear Lily’s bedroom door open.

Soft footsteps going down the stairs.

At first I told myself: Maybe she’s hungry.

But there was something that confused me.

Lily never turned on the lights.

I could see the faint moonlight coming through the hallway window, enough to make out a shadow moving.

But she still walked through the darkness.

One morning, I casually asked her:

Lily, did you go down to the kitchen last night?”

She froze for a split second.

Then she smiled softly.

Yes… I usually drink milk before bed.”

The answer sounded normal.

But somehow, the look in her eyes made me feel… uneasy.

2

About a week later, I started paying closer attention.

That night, I pretended to be asleep.

At 12:07 a.m., I heard Lily’s door open.

The door creaked softly.

I peeked through the small gap of my bedroom door.

Lily stepped into the hallway.

She was wearing a thin white spaghetti-strap nightgown.

There was nothing wrong with that—it was normal sleepwear.

But… I didn’t understand why she would go to the kitchen dressed like that.

She walked down the stairs slowly.

No lights.

No sound.

I quietly sat up.

A strange feeling ran down my spine.

Not exactly jealousy.

Just… instinct.

I slipped out of bed carefully so I wouldn’t wake Daniel.

Then I stepped into the hallway.

The staircase was dark.

I placed each step as gently as possible.

My heart started beating faster.

When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I heard whispering.

Not one voice.

Two.

I froze.

A female voice—Lily’s.

And…

a man’s voice.

A voice so familiar I couldn’t possibly mistake it.

Daniel.

3

I took another step.

From the corner of the staircase, I could see part of the kitchen.

The refrigerator door was open, casting a pale bluish light across the room.

And in that dim light…

I saw Lily.

She was holding Daniel tightly.

Her arms were wrapped around his neck.

Her head rested against his chest.

And Daniel… was holding her back.

In that moment, everything seemed to freeze.

My ears rang.

I could no longer hear what they were saying clearly.

All I could see was the two of them standing in my kitchen—at midnight—holding each other like lovers.

A chill ran down my spine.

But instead of storming in like in the movies, I stood still.

I wanted to know.

What exactly was going on.

Lily spoke softly.

I miss you.”

Daniel sighed.

Lily… I already told you… this shouldn’t continue.”

My heart pounded.

I gripped the stair railing tightly.

Lily looked up at him.

But you miss me too.”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said quietly:

Emily doesn’t deserve to be hurt.”

My name echoed in the dark kitchen.

My throat tightened.

Lily loosened her arms slightly.

When are you going to tell her?”

Daniel stayed silent.

A few seconds passed.

Then he said:

I don’t know yet.”

4

At that point, I couldn’t stand there any longer.

I stepped onto the last stair.

The wood made a creaking sound.

Both of them turned around instantly.

Daniel froze.

Lily went pale.

I walked into the kitchen.

The refrigerator light illuminated their faces.

I looked straight at my husband.

You don’t know… what?”

Daniel opened his mouth.

But no words came out.

Lily stepped back.

I turned to her.

Lily.”

My voice was so calm it surprised even me.

Would you like to explain?”

She trembled.

Mrs. Emily… I…”

Daniel interrupted.

Emily, listen to me—”

No.”

I raised my hand.

Let her speak.”

Lily bit her lip.

Tears began to fall.

I’m sorry…”

I looked at her.

Sorry for what?”

She couldn’t answer.

I turned to Daniel.

You say it.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

Then he said something that made my heart drop.

Lily and I… knew each other before I met you.”

I froze.

5

Daniel explained that seven years ago, when he was still living in Chicago, he and Lily had a short relationship.

Then Lily moved away.

They lost contact.

Until three months ago.

The day Lily came to apply for the job at our house.

When Daniel opened the door and saw her, he was just as shocked as she was.

But because Lily needed the job and was struggling, he didn’t send her away.

I thought… the past was over,” Daniel said.

But then…”

Lily continued quietly.

We started talking again.”

I let out a small laugh.

A cold laugh.

And talking… at midnight in the kitchen?”

No one answered.

I looked at Lily.

You were hugging my husband.”

She lowered her head.

I’m sorry…”

I turned to Daniel.

And you hugged her back.”

He didn’t deny it.

At that moment, I felt something strange.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

Just deep disappointment.

6

I pulled out a chair and sat down at the kitchen table.

Alright,” I said.

Now both of you tell me everything.”

Daniel sat across from me.

Lily remained standing.

Daniel spoke.

I didn’t sleep with her.”

I looked straight into his eyes.

But you wanted to.”

He stayed silent.

That was the answer.

Lily said softly,

We only talked… remembering the past…”

I laughed.

Hugging each other at midnight to remember the past?”

She said nothing.

The kitchen felt unbearably heavy.

Finally I asked:

How long has this been going on?”

Daniel answered quietly:

About… two weeks.”

Two weeks.

Two weeks sleeping beside him.

Two weeks paying this girl’s salary.

Two weeks of midnight meetings in my kitchen.

7

I stood up.

Both of them looked at me.

I spoke to Lily first.

You have ten minutes to pack your things.”

She panicked.

Mrs. Emily—”

I’ll pay your full month’s salary,” I said.

But you leave my house tonight.”

Tears streamed down her face.

She looked at Daniel.

But Daniel said nothing.

Finally, Lily turned and ran upstairs.

Her bedroom door slammed shut.

The kitchen was silent.

Only Daniel and I remained.

8

We sat there quietly.

For a long time.

Finally Daniel spoke.

Emily… I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

Do you love her?”

He answered immediately.

No.”

But you still want her.”

Daniel lowered his head.

I sighed.

Daniel… do you know what hurts me the most?”

He shook his head.

It’s not that you hugged her,” I said.

It’s that you hid it from me.”

Daniel remained silent.

I continued:

If I hadn’t woken up tonight… how far would this have gone?”

He had no answer.

9

Ten minutes later, Lily came downstairs.

She was dragging a small suitcase.

Her eyes were red.

She stood by the door.

Looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

I’m really sorry.”

I said nothing.

She opened the door.

And disappeared into the night.

The door closed.

And somehow…

a chapter of my marriage closed with it.

10

That night, I didn’t sleep.

Daniel didn’t either.

We sat in the living room until nearly dawn.

No shouting.

No crying.

Just talking.

For a very long time.

Daniel told me everything.

From the shock of seeing Lily again.

To the late-night conversations in the kitchen.

From the hugs…

to the moment he realized things were going too far.

But he hadn’t stopped it in time.

Until I saw them.

When the sun finally began to rise, I stood up.

Daniel asked quietly,

What are you going to do?”

I answered,

I don’t know yet.”

I looked at him.

But at least now… we know the truth.”

Daniel nodded.

And for the first time in a long while, I realized something.

The truth can sometimes hurt more than a lie.

But at least…

it gives us the chance to decide.

To stay.

Or to walk away.
