Brit, 34, Dies After Leaping From Boat on Zante Turtle Trip — His Devastated Fiancée Reveals the Desperate Final Moments as a Friend Fought to Save Him… What Happened Next Left Everyone in Tears
Brit, 34, Dies in Tragic Zante Sea Horror Just Days Into Holiday — His Fiancée Reveals the Heartbreaking Battle to Save Him
A dream getaway in Greece ended in unimaginable tragedy when a 34-year-old British man died after jumping into the sea during a turtle-spotting trip in Zante.
Cameron William Wallace, from Exeter, had travelled to the Greek island hoping to enjoy a break with his close friend. But within minutes of entering the water, a relaxing afternoon turned into a desperate fight for his life.
His devastated fiancée, Silvana Bernardes, 34, has now spoken about the final moments and the frantic attempt by Cameron’s friend to save him.
The tragedy came just days after Cameron arrived on the island.
Silvana said he had only travelled to Zante on Monday and had been “really excited” about the trip.
On Tuesday afternoon, Cameron and his friend Steve Pittman were aboard a rented boat near Marathonisi, a small island known for its sea turtles.
At around 3pm, Cameron decided to jump into the water.
Nothing appeared to suggest that the seemingly ordinary swim would become fatal.
But shortly afterwards, a man aboard another boat noticed something was wrong.
He spotted Cameron lying face-down in the water.
He immediately called out to Steve, asking whether his friend was okay.
What happened next was a frantic race against time.
Steve rushed to Cameron and helped pull him from the water. He then desperately attempted to revive his friend, performing CPR while waiting for emergency assistance.
According to a source quoted by The Sun, Cameron was initially breathing after being pulled from the sea but stopped responding several minutes later.
A Coast Guard patrol boat eventually arrived and transported Cameron toward an ambulance, which took him to Zakynthos General Hospital.
But tragically, the 34-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
His exact cause of death has not yet been established, with forensic examinations still underway.
Silvana said the family is waiting for answers and does not yet know whether Cameron suffered a medical emergency or drowned after taking in water.
For the woman who had shared 11 years of her life with Cameron, the news was almost impossible to comprehend.
The couple had only recently become engaged.
They had begun planning their wedding and were looking forward to building the next chapter of their lives together.
Instead, Silvana received a devastating phone call early Wednesday morning.
She recalled being told that something terrible had happened and that Cameron had died.
The news left her struggling to believe what she was hearing.
Cameron had been expected to return home that weekend.
He never would.
The couple had travelled around the world together during their relationship and had built a life side by side.
Silvana said Cameron had recently lost his job after running his own electrical engineering business for about a decade.
The holiday had been intended as a chance for him to escape his worries, relax and enjoy some time with his friend.
Instead, it became the last trip of his life.
Perhaps one of the most painful parts of the tragedy has been the guilt carried by Cameron’s friend.
Steve has reportedly been left blaming himself for what happened.
But Silvana has insisted that he should not feel responsible.
She said everyone had tried their best to save Cameron and that there was nothing more his friend could have done.
Now, as Cameron’s loved ones wait for the results of the forensic examination, the family is left facing a future they never expected.
The wedding they had just begun planning will never take place.
The man Silvana expected to come home from Greece is gone.
And a holiday that began with excitement, sunshine and the promise of seeing turtles has ended with a grieving fiancée waiting for answers.
The British Foreign Office has confirmed that it is supporting the family of a British man who died in Greece and is in contact with local authorities.
For Silvana, however, the investigation cannot change the most painful truth.
Cameron had gone to Greece expecting to return home.
Instead, she is now preparing to say goodbye to the man she had loved for 11 years — just as they were preparing to become husband and wife.
A carefree jump into the Mediterranean became a desperate rescue attempt.
And in the end, despite every effort to save him, Cameron never made it home.
