The entire groom’s family left the wedding midway through because they thought the bride was too fat. But they couldn’t have imagined the secret she held would change the fate of their entire family…
The ancient St. Patrick’s Cathedral in the heart of Manhattan, New York, shone brightly today under the light of thousands of candles and garlands of pristine white orchids designed by top artisans. Today was the wedding of the Sterling family – one of the wealthiest and most prestigious aristocratic families on the East Coast of the United States.
Standing before the cross was Evelyn. She wore a pristine white satin wedding dress. But instead of whispers of admiration, the groom’s family seats were filled with mocking murmurs and contemptuous glances.
The wedding dress seemed to be struggling to fit Evelyn’s oversized figure. In the past two years, from a slender girl when she first started dating Julian Sterling, Evelyn had gained nearly 80 pounds (about 36 kg). Her body was swollen, her face had lost its delicate features, replaced by a heavy, weary expression.
Standing beside her was Julian, her perfect fiancé in a custom-tailored tuxedo. But his gaze didn’t meet Evelyn’s; instead, it averted, his hands hanging limply, a mixture of embarrassment and resignation.
The sacred music began to play. The old priest cleared his throat, smiling at them both:
“In the presence of God, does anyone object to this marriage?”
A brief silence fell. Then, a sharp, cold voice broke the sacred stillness.
“I object!”
Victoria Sterling—Julian’s mother, the iron woman of the family—stood up abruptly from the front row. She wore a black velvet dress, her eyes like razor blades fixed on Evelyn.
“Mother…” Julian stammered, startled.
“Silence, Julian!” Victoria snapped, then turned to look at the hundreds of elite guests. “The Sterling family has built a legacy of excellence for over a century. We have risen through intellect, shrewdness, and iron discipline. I will not allow my son to tarnish the family’s legacy by marrying a… a woman who lacks even the self-respect to control her weight!”
The entire cathedral erupted in shock. Evelyn stood frozen, her face drained of color. Her hands clutched her wedding bouquet, her heart pounding.
“Mrs. Victoria…” Evelyn whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. “Please…”
“Don’t call my name!” Victoria stepped into the aisle, casting a look of disgust at the bride. “Look at yourself, Evelyn. You’re a lump of fat, a ridiculous stain on this wedding hall. You don’t deserve to set foot in Sterling Manor. This marriage is officially annulled!”
Victoria turned to look at all the groom’s relatives seated behind her. “All of you from Sterling, stand up! We’re leaving. No one is to stay and witness this farce for another second.”
As if by a queen’s command, dozens of members of the groom’s family, from powerful uncles to arrogant aunts, rose simultaneously. They whispered, sneered, shook their heads in pity, and turned to walk out the door.
Evelyn trembled, her eyes filled with desperate pleading as she looked at the man she had given her heart to.
“Julian… You promised to hold my hand until the end of the road. You know how much I love you…”
Julian stepped back, his gaze avoiding her tears. He stroked his face, sighing cowardly.
“I’m sorry, Evie,” Julian whispered, his voice cold and sharp like a knife tearing through her chest. “My mother was right. You… you’ve let yourself go too far. I can’t take you to high-society parties like this. We’re over.”
With that, the cowardly man turned and strode after his mother’s powerful figure, leaving the bride standing alone, sobbing on the altar.
The Twist of Life
But as Julian and Victoria reached the enormous doorway of the church, the oak door slammed shut from the outside.
A tall man, wearing a gray overcoat, with a rugged appearance and a faint, long scar running from his forehead to his cheekbone, coldly entered, blocking their way out.
That was Caleb Sterling – Victoria’s eldest son, the older brother ostracized by the family for refusing to follow the ruthless family business path, instead becoming a surgeon serving in the army.
“Caleb? What the hell are you doing here?” Victoria glared. “Open the door!”
Caleb ignored his mother. He strode confidently across the marble floor, straight past the empty seats of the groom’s side, up to the altar, and stood shielding Evelyn like a protective shield.
He spun around, snatched the microphone from the priest’s hand, his eyes blazing as he glared at those attempting to flee.
“You call her a disgrace? You mock her body?” Caleb’s voice boomed like thunder, echoing through every corner of the room.
The cathedral. “You blind fools! You have no idea the secret hidden beneath that wedding dress, a secret that saved your entire proud family!”
Victoria and Julian froze. The bride’s guests and the remaining guests held their breath.
“What nonsense are you spouting, Caleb?” Julian frowned.
Caleb gestured to Evelyn. Tears streamed down her cheeks, but Evelyn took a deep breath. From within the cleverly designed lining beneath the wedding bouquet, she pulled out a file with a high-security seal from Johns Hopkins Hospital, along with a small glass vial containing a shimmering green liquid.
She placed it on the altar.
“Let me tell you why Evelyn gained 80 pounds in the last two years,” Caleb snarled, casting a contemptuous glance at his mother and brother. “The Sterling family carries a genetic curse. A rare autoimmune disorder. Victoria, you know that. Your twelve-year-old youngest daughter, Mia, is lying in a sterile room at the hospital, dying day by day because her body is destroying its own organs, right?”
Victoria’s face turned ashen. It was a family secret she had always kept hidden to protect the value of the corporation’s stock.
“Evelyn isn’t just an ordinary orphan girl. She’s a leading Biotechnology Doctor,” Caleb continued. “When she learned Mia was ill, and Julian also carried that deadly recessive gene, Evelyn secretly redirected her entire research project, dedicating 20 hours a day to the lab to find a cure.”
Julian’s eyes widened in astonishment, staring at the vial of medicine on the table. “An antidote? You mean…”
“That’s right, you idiot!” Caleb roared. “But for a genetically modified drug to pass FDA testing, it takes at least five years. Mia only has a few months to live. So, to shorten the time, to get a complete and absolutely safe formula for your sister… Evelyn turned herself into a living guinea pig!”
The entire church was like a bomb had been dropped. Gasps of horror filled the air.
“For the past twenty-four months, she’s been injecting herself with massive doses of untested immunosuppressant compounds and artificial hormones. The side effects have completely collapsed her metabolism. Water retention, severe hypothyroidism, and obesity have ravaged her body. Her beauty is ruined!”
Caleb pointed directly at Victoria, who was trembling so much she could barely stand.
“The ‘obesity’ you just insulted, the ‘lumps of fat’ you despised, are actually the cruel mark of the greatest sacrifice! She traded her life and youth to concoct the only medicine in the world that could save your daughter, save the perfect bloodline you always revered!”
The blue glass vial on the table emitted a quiet light, yet possessed the power of a living being.
The truth stripped away all prejudice. The arrogance of the Sterling family was completely crushed under the weight of boundless love and selflessness.
Victoria knelt on the marble floor. The iron woman’s face was streaming with tears. She covered her mouth with her hand, her choked sobs of profound remorse, of her own cruelty and shallowness, bursting forth.
“Evelyn… Oh God… What have I done…” Victoria cried out.
Julian stood frozen, his world collapsing around him. He realized he had just thrown away the most precious diamond in the world for a mere facade. He rushed to the platform, knelt at Evelyn’s feet, and clutched the hem of her wedding dress.
“Evie! I’m sorry! I’m a beast! Please… please forgive me! We’ll continue with the wedding! I don’t care about appearances anymore, I love you!” Julian cried out desperately.
Evelyn looked down at the cowardly man prostrating himself at her feet. Gone was the weakness and despair; her eyes now held the serenity of someone who had been reborn after being burned.
She gently stepped back, pulling the hem of her dress from Julian’s grasp.
“You don’t love me, Julian. You only love the false perfection of this world,” Evelyn said, her voice soft but firm, like a verdict. “I once wanted to use this medicine as a surprise wedding gift to prove that I was worthy of your family. But now, I realize… it is you who are unworthy of my love.”
Evelyn picked up the glass vial and file, stepped down from the altar, and walked past Julian and Victoria. She placed them in the hands of a lawyer for the Sterling family standing nearby.
“This medicine and the formula are complete. Take it to the hospital and save Mia’s life. She is an angel; she doesn’t deserve to share the punishment with your arrogance,” Evelyn said.
Then she turned her back, facing all those who had turned their backs on her.
“You can…”
He will preserve his perfect bloodline. As for me, I will preserve my self-respect. “This wedding is officially over.”
Having said that, Evelyn lifted the heavy hem of her wedding dress, held her head high, and strode down the center aisle. She wasn’t alone. Caleb Sterling stepped forward, draped his coat over her shoulders to keep her warm, and walked steadily beside her like a loyal bodyguard, leaving behind the heart-wrenching cries of his mother and younger brother amidst the shattered wedding hall.
The End of Rebirth
Three years later.
In a magnificent hall in Washington D.C., the prestigious Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Dr. Evelyn.
As she stepped onto the stage to receive the award, the entire hall rose to their feet and applauded loudly. Evelyn today had completely shed the image of a swollen and weary bride. Having stopped using the experimental chemicals, her metabolism had recovered. She stood there, slender, radiant, wearing a turquoise evening gown, shining with the brilliant beauty of both intellect and spirit. Soul.
Below the stage, Caleb Sterling sat there, smiling proudly, his eyes filled with deep love for her. They had been married for two years, a marriage built on understanding, respect, and shared values of the most sacred human values.
Meanwhile, far away in New York, on a television screen, Julian Vance and his mother, Victoria, sat silently in an empty room. The Sterling Corporation had been severely weakened by scandals and a lack of leadership talent since Caleb’s departure. They had retained the “perfection” of their bloodline, but had forever lost the opportunity to have a daughter-in-law, a wife of the greatest.
Their arrogance and prejudice had cost them dearly: They would live the rest of their lives in endless regret, watching the woman they had once rejected now shine brightly like the most brilliant star in the world.
