The Smell in the Bathroom
Emily Carter never imagined that her marriage would begin to crack… because of a smell.
It wasn’t perfume.
Not alcohol.
Not even cigarette smoke.
It was something far harder to describe—sharp, metallic, almost… rotting.
The first time she noticed it was one evening in March.
Emily had just gotten home from work, exhausted after a long day at her media company. She stepped inside, dropped her bag, and immediately felt that something was… off.
“David?” she called out.
Her husband’s voice came from the bathroom.
“I’m in here! Give me a minute!”
The sound of running water echoed.
Emily frowned as she walked closer to the door.
And then—she smelled it.
That smell.
Her stomach tightened slightly.
“What are you doing in there?” she asked.
“Just showering,” David replied quickly.
Emily didn’t press further. But that night, when David finally stepped out, she noticed something strange—
He had been in there for nearly two hours.
“You were in there a long time,” she said casually.
David shrugged. “I’ve been stressed. Long showers help.”
It sounded reasonable.
But the smell… lingered.
The Days That Followed
At first, Emily tried to ignore it.
Everyone has strange habits, right?
But then it kept happening.
Every night.
David would enter the bathroom at exactly 9 PM.
And every time—he stayed inside for nearly two hours.
And every time—that smell returned.
Emily started paying attention.
She began going into the bathroom right after he finished.
Nothing looked unusual.
Clean.
Dry.
Normal.
Except for the smell.
It wasn’t like a clogged drain.
It wasn’t mold.
It was something… decomposing.
And it was getting stronger.
David Changed
It wasn’t just the smell.
David started changing too.
He became defensive—almost angry—whenever Emily mentioned the bathroom.
One evening, she gently said:
“Do you think we should call a plumber? There’s a weird smell…”
David snapped immediately.
“No! I already checked it!”
“But—”
“Emily, I said it’s fine.”
His tone was cold enough to silence her instantly.
This wasn’t the man she married.
David used to be patient.
Now… it felt like he was hiding something.
Night 27
Emily started counting.
She didn’t know why. But something felt wrong.
On the 27th night since the smell first appeared, she decided she couldn’t ignore it anymore.
That evening, she pretended to go to bed early.
At 9 PM, like clockwork, David entered the bathroom.
The door shut.
Locked.
Water running.
Emily opened her eyes.
Silently, she got out of bed.
Step by step… she approached the bathroom.
She pressed her ear against the door.
There was water.
But also something else.
A metallic sound.
Scraping.
Like something being… unscrewed.
Her heart began pounding.
“What are you doing in there?” she called.
The noise stopped instantly.
Silence.
Then David answered, his voice strained:
“I… dropped something. It’s nothing.”
Emily stood there.
She didn’t believe him.
But she couldn’t prove anything.
Not yet.
The Opportunity
The next day, David announced he had a business trip.
“I’ll be in Chicago for three days,” he said, avoiding her eyes.
Emily nodded.
Inside, something was building.
This was her chance.
She didn’t want to doubt her husband.
But she needed the truth.
Day One Without David
Emily stood in front of the bathroom door.
Her hand hovered over the handle.
It felt like standing before a door that, once opened… would change everything.
She took a deep breath.
Then stepped inside.
Everything looked the same.
Clean.
Organized.
Normal.
But the smell… was still there.
Faint—but unmistakable.
Emily began checking everything.
The cabinet.
The sink.
The bathtub.
Nothing.
Then her eyes stopped at the pipes beneath the sink.
She knelt down.
The smell was stronger here.
Much stronger.
Her stomach twisted.
Taking the Pipe Apart
Emily wasn’t a plumber.
But she knew enough to loosen a simple pipe.
She grabbed a wrench.
Her hands trembled.
“It’s just a check,” she whispered.
“Just a smell…”
She started turning the metal joint.
A click.
Water dripped.
The smell intensified instantly.
Thick.
Rotten.
Suffocating.
She clenched her teeth and kept going.
Finally—the pipe loosened.
She pulled it free.
And then…
She saw something inside.
That Moment
Emily stopped breathing.
Something was stuck in the pipe.
Not hair.
Not debris.
But—
A plastic bag.
Black.
Stuffed tightly inside.
Her heart slammed against her chest.
Her hands shook violently.
She pulled it out.
The smell exploded into the air.
She nearly gagged.
“No… no way…”
She whispered.
Slowly, she opened the bag.
And then—
She screamed.
Inside the Bag
It wasn’t what she expected.
Not a body.
Not anything from a horror movie.
But—
Dozens of phones.
Old phones.
Broken phones.
Disassembled phones.
All covered in a dark brown substance.
Like dried blood.
Emily stumbled backward.
Her mind spun.
“What… is David doing?”
The Truth Unfolds
Emily didn’t stop.
She tore through the bathroom.
And she found more.
Inside the ceiling panel.
Behind the cabinet.
Hidden in the walls.
Electronics.
Phones.
Hard drives.
Memory cards.
Hundreds of them.
Some still powered on.
Some with screens still glowing.
Emily picked one up.
The screen lit up.
A video file.
She pressed play.
And then—
She froze.
It was her.
In the bedroom.
Undressed.
Completely unaware she was being recorded.
Emily dropped the phone.
Her entire body went cold.
The Real Nightmare
David wasn’t cheating.
He wasn’t hiding a body.
He was doing something far worse.
He was recording people.
Secretly.
Not just her.
Others too.
Emily opened more files.
Different women.
In bathrooms.
Hotel rooms.
Private spaces.
All unaware.
All violated.
Emily trembled.
“No… this can’t be…”
But it was.
The Source of the Smell
Emily looked back at the pipe.
And she understood.
David had been hiding the devices there.
Broken ones.
Damaged ones.
The ones he needed to destroy.
He stuffed them into the plumbing system.
And the smell—
Came from leaking batteries.
Burnt circuits.
Decay.
The Ending
Emily didn’t wait for David to come home.
She called the police.
Three hours later, the house was sealed.
Hundreds of devices were collected.
The data inside… was enough to shock anyone.
David was arrested the moment he landed.
Aftermath
A month later, Emily stood in the empty house.
She still remembered the smell.
The one that changed everything.
Sometimes, the truth doesn’t start with something big.
It starts with something small.
A detail.
A habit.
A question left unanswered.
And sometimes…
What you find when you finally “look beneath the surface”…
Is something you were never ready to face.
