I went to meet my boyfriend’s parents after a year of dating. He had told me that his parents were very kind, so I shouldn’t worry. I brought a basket of fruit with me. But the moment his mother saw the watch I was wearing, she immediately grabbed a bowl and shouted, “GET OUT…!”
Minh and I had been together for exactly one year. A year long enough for me to believe that we could take our relationship further. When Minh held my hand and said,
“Come to my house this weekend. My parents are very gentle. Don’t worry,”
I nodded, my heart fluttering with both anxiety and excitement.
Before leaving, I carefully chose the most beautiful fruit basket. Standing at his gate, I gently adjusted the watch on my wrist—a gift my mother had given me when I entered university.
The door opened. I smiled politely:
“Hello, ma’am, I’m—”
CRASH!
The sound of a bowl hitting the tile floor was as sharp as a knife cutting through my ears.
Minh’s mother froze, her face drained of color, eyes fixed intensely on… the watch on my wrist. Before I could understand what was happening, I only had time to see her hand fling a glass of water straight at my face.
“N—NOW! GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!” she screamed, her voice full of hatred and resentment.
I went completely silent.
Minh, panicked, rushed forward:
“Mom! What are you doing?!”
His father hurried out, pulling her back and apologizing profusely:
“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry. We’ll talk to you later. Don’t be afraid…”
But I couldn’t hear anything else. My body trembled with shock and humiliation. Tears mixed with the water on my face.
Minh ran after me, calling out as he ran:
“Wait! Please! I don’t understand what’s happening…”
I ran like someone was chasing me from behind.
It wasn’t until that evening that the secret was revealed. Minh called me, his voice trembling:
“I know now… it’s because of the watch.”
