MY FUTURE DAUGHTER-IN-LAW HUMILIATED ME AS “POOR” AT THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY—THEN MY SON OPENED HIS FATHER’S SAFE AND DISCOVERED THE TRUTH BEHIND HER FAMILY’S FORTUNE
My name is Corazon Santos, a 59-year-old widow living in an old wooden house in Quezon, Manila. For the past sixteen years, ever since my husband, Mateo, tragically died in a motorcycle accident, I worked tirelessly selling goods at the local market to raise my only son, Paolo. I accepted wearing worn-out clothes and pinching every penny so Paolo could attend the most expensive private university and build a bright future.
Paolo was a good boy, but things began to change when he introduced his girlfriend. Her name was Isabel—the spoiled daughter of a wealthy family that owned a chain of luxury restaurants across the city.
On the night of their engagement party at a lavish five-star hotel, I put on the finest Baro’t Saya dress I had kept for years. Yet, the moment I walked into the lobby, Isabel pulled me into a corner of the dressing room. She cast an undisguised look of contempt at my outfit before shoving a thick envelope into my hands.
“Auntie Corazon, tonight is attended strictly by high society and politicians,” Isabel lowered her voice, her eyes sharp as knives. “Your attire and presence really don’t fit this atmosphere. Take this money and catch a cab home to rest. I already told Paolo that your blood pressure suddenly spiked and you couldn’t make it.”
I stood frozen in shock. I looked out through the glass window. Paolo was standing there in a sharp tuxedo. He saw me, but he immediately turned away, pretending to be busy chatting with Isabel’s family business partners. Bowing his head in silence, he accepted that bitter arrangement.
I didn’t cry. I handed the envelope back and quietly took a jeepney home in the pouring rain. But what Isabel and her family never realized… was that my Santos family was never as poor or helpless as they assumed.
Late that night, after the engagement party ended, Paolo rushed home. His eyes were bloodshot, his breath ragged with remorse and overwhelming guilt.
“Mom… I’m so sorry. I was such a coward…” Paolo collapsed his head onto the dining table.
I looked at my son, without a trace of anger in my eyes, only a profound sadness. I walked into my late husband’s bedroom and returned with a rusted metal key and a yellowed certificate.
“Before your father passed away, he left this safe in his old study,” I placed the key in front of Paolo. “He instructed me to give it to you on the very day you decided to start a family. It’s time you opened it yourself.”
With trembling hands, Paolo took the key and walked toward the wall-mounted safe hidden behind an old family portrait. As the heavy iron door clicked open with a dry thud, there was no gold or expensive jewelry inside.
There were only two thick file folders and a letter sealed in red wax.
Paolo opened the first folder. All color drained from his face.
It was the original founding contract for the restaurant chain Isabel’s family currently claimed to own. The entire startup capital and the leases for prime locations across Manila twelve years ago… had all originated from a private trust fund guaranteed under my husband’s name—Mateo Santos. Isabel’s family were merely hired managers. Inside the contract was a vital clause underlined in red ink: The trust will automatically reclaim all assets and company ownership if the management engages in fraud or severe moral misconduct against the beneficiary—Paolo Santos.
“What… what is this, Mom?” Paolo stammered, his hands shaking violently. “Dad… Dad was the actual owner of the entire restaurant chain? Why have we been living like this all these years?”
“Your father wanted you to grow up through your own strength, not become a spoiled heir,” I answered softly. “And he knew the true nature of that family long ago.”
Yet the most chilling truth lay within the second folder and the wax-sealed letter.
Paolo broke the seal. My husband’s familiar handwriting appeared, every line piercing through his mind like a blade:
“To Paolo, my son.
If you are reading this letter, it means you have grown up and are preparing for marriage. I must reveal a secret I carried to my grave.
Isabel is not their biological daughter. She was an abandoned child whom I secretly funded through a private charity since she was two years old. But the reason I did so… was out of guilt. Her family’s debt to me back then drove Isabel’s biological mother to abandon her in despair.
However, be extremely cautious. The family that adopted Isabel is insatiably greedy. They discovered the existence of this trust fund three years ago. If Isabel is with you not out of love, but because she or her family is attempting to claim this entire fortune before you turn 28… then use the first folder to put an end to everything.”
The letter slipped from Paolo’s grasp.
At that exact moment, Paolo’s phone rang loudly in the quiet wooden house. The screen displayed the name “Isabel”.
Paolo looked at me, his eyes wide in utter shock and deep bitterness. He slowly answered the call and switched on the speakerphone.
On the other end of the line, Isabel’s sweet yet condescending voice rang out: “Paolo, darling, did your mother get home safely? I think next week we should discuss transferring your mother’s old house so we can use it as collateral for our restaurant’s new branch…”
Paolo clenched his fist, staring intently at the trust contract on the table that held full ownership of the restaurant chain.
He took a deep breath, his voice turning cold as ice: “Isabel… You don’t need to worry about my mother’s house anymore. Tomorrow morning, meet me and the Santos family lawyer at the central office.”
