My name is Rachel Carter, 33 years old, living with my parents in a two-story house in Portland, Oregon. I’m the oldest of two siblings. My younger brother — Thomas Carter, 29 — got married two years ago. His wife, Emily Collins, 27, is my sister-in-law.
We were never very close. We got along politely, but truthfully… there were many things about her that rubbed me the wrong way. You know that feeling — when someone walks into the room and the air suddenly feels tight.
From the first day Thomas brought Emily home to meet the family, something about her just didn’t sit right with me. Not because of her background — her family is modest, small business owners — but because her personality always felt… evasive. She often said those overly sweet lines like:
“Oh, leave it there. I’ll take care of it!”
And then she would never touch a thing.
1. My sister-in-law’s laziness made my patience stretch thin
Our house is spacious — big yard, wide garage, lots to keep tidy. Emily works a regular office job, free every weekend, yet I’ve never seen her wash even a single bowl.
Not once.
Every weekend, Mom and I would be busy cleaning: vacuuming, mopping, cooking, laundry… Emily would simply stand around making small talk:
“Oh, don’t worry, I’ll do it later.”
Then walk straight back into her room with her phone.
One time, I intentionally left the dirty dishes in the sink for three days just to see if she would react.
Emily walked past them as if they were invisible.
On the fourth day, Mom — unable to stand the mess — washed everything herself.
Right after Mom finished, Emily came downstairs, sighed dramatically, and said:
“Oh no, Mom, let me do it… you shouldn’t have.”
I nearly exploded.
2. Seven months pregnant — the whole family celebrated
About half a year ago, Emily announced she was pregnant.
Seven months along.
My entire family was thrilled, especially my mother. She’d been longing for a grandchild. When Emily handed her the ultrasound photo, Mom almost cried.
From that day on, everything changed.
If before, Mom just gently reminded her:
“If you’re free, help out a little.”
Now, she wouldn’t let Emily lift a finger.
She cooked every meal and carried trays upstairs to Emily’s room like Emily was bedridden instead of pregnant.
I hated it.
I told Mom:
“Pregnant women can still move around normally. She’s not fragile.”
Mom didn’t answer.
And that’s when I started noticing something strange: Emily’s belly looked… off.
Sometimes round, sometimes oddly stiff.
Sometimes high, sometimes low.
One day, it even looked tilted to one side.
I asked Mom:
“Has anyone actually touched her belly?”
She shook her head.
Emily always refused, saying the “baby” was too sensitive.
I felt a chill down my spine.
3. The land transfer request — and her suspicious motives
Two weeks ago, Emily clung to Mom the entire afternoon, speaking softly:
“Mom, if you really love us, could you transfer that piece of land behind the house to our name? We’ll build a small guest house for you someday…”
The moment I heard that, I knew something was wrong.
Mom asked my opinion.
I said:
“Wait until she gives birth. I don’t trust her yet.”
Mom agreed.
Of course, Emily reacted emotionally afterward — crying to Thomas, to her mom, even posting vague status updates online.
Knowing her personality, I suspected she wanted something big.
But never — not once — did I imagine she was hiding something this extreme.
4. The truth revealed in a single accidental moment
Two days ago, I went to work, only to realize halfway that I’d forgotten important documents. I turned back.
The house was quiet.
Mom was out shopping, and Emily was likely resting.
I went upstairs, grabbed my documents, then walked past Thomas and Emily’s room — the door was slightly open.
I glanced inside.
And what I saw made my whole body freeze.
Emily was asleep on the bed.
Her shirt had ridden up slightly.
Right there, in plain sight—
Her stomach was completely flat.
Flat enough that I could see faint muscle lines.
Next to her, lying openly on the bed, was a fake pregnancy belly — a high-quality silicone model used by actresses on movie sets.
It was just… sitting there.
I stared so hard my eyes hurt.
My mind went blank.
My chest tightened as if someone had punched the breath out of me.
Emily — my sister-in-law — had been faking her pregnancy.
Not for a few weeks.
Not for a month.
But for seven entire months.
5. Why would a woman fake something like this?
Blood rushed to my face. My hands shook.
Every time Emily complained she was tired,
every time she refused to attend family gatherings,
every time she avoided chores,
every time she said her “baby” didn’t like being touched…
All of it.
Every single part.
A performance.
But what stunned me most wasn’t Emily.
It was Thomas.
My brother absolutely knew.
There is no way a husband sleeps next to his wife for seven months and doesn’t notice a silicone belly.
That meant—
The two of them conspired together to deceive our entire family.
To deceive my mom — who loved Emily like her own daughter.
To deceive all the relatives.
To deceive everyone waiting for the baby’s arrival.
And for what?
Because of that $275,000 piece of land Mom owned.
My heart sank.
6. Should I expose them… or stay silent?
I stood outside their door, fists clenched, fighting the urge to barge in and shout:
“You’re lying to all of us!”
But I didn’t.
I walked away quietly, like a ghost.
All afternoon, I couldn’t focus.
Every suspicious thing Emily had done replayed in my mind like a movie.
-
Avoiding family gatherings
-
Refusing anyone to touch her belly
-
Claiming she felt tired only during chores
-
Her sudden request for the land transfer
-
That unnatural belly shape
It all connected now.
That night, I sat in my room, light dim, hands trembling. I knew I had to tell someone… but who?
My parents are old.
Dad has high blood pressure.
Mom loves Emily deeply.
If I reveal this—
It would tear the entire family apart.
Thomas’s marriage might collapse.
Mom might collapse too.
Our home would become a battlefield.
But staying silent?
That would mean letting them continue the deception.
Letting them take the land.
Letting them manipulate my parents.
And I would become just another person enabling the lie.
I was torn in two directions:
Reveal the truth to protect my family.
or
Stay silent to prevent immediate chaos.
7. What am I supposed to do now?
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw that silicone belly lying on the bed next to Emily’s “sleeping pregnant body.”
It’s an image I’ll never be able to erase.
I know I need to decide.
But both options are terrifying.
If I speak up — the family will face an emotional earthquake.
If I stay quiet — the lie will grow, and the consequences will be worse.
I sat on my bed, head in my hands, whispering to myself:
“What should I do?
Should I tell Mom and Dad?
Should I confront them privately?
How could they deceive us like this?
And… what happens next?”
I truly don’t know.
