The American soldier had been away from home for ten long years, yet he never failed to write letters to his wife. Each month, without exception, he poured his heart onto paper, telling her about his days, his dreams, and how much he missed her. But in the past two years, something strange happened — dozens of letters he sent never received a single reply.
He began to worry. Was she ill? Had something happened? But the military didn’t allow him to return home, so all he could do was wait and hope.
Recently, after a major victory, he was granted leave. Deciding to surprise his wife, he returned home without informing her. As he approached the gate, he heard the cheerful laughter of a child from inside. A child? he thought, puzzled. Whose child could that be? We don’t have any children…
Heart pounding, he pushed the gate open — and froze.
There, in the yard, stood his wife holding a two-year-old boy. Beside her was another man. The three of them looked like a perfect little family. The soldier felt his face burn with anger and disbelief. He rushed forward, his voice trembling:
“Tell me what’s going on here! Why didn’t you reply to my letters for the past two years? So this is the reason for your silence?”
His wife turned toward him, her eyes wide, tears welling up.
“Letters? I never received a single one from you! Why are you saying that?” she cried. “I thought you had forgotten me… that you weren’t coming back. That’s why I…”
Her voice broke as the truth unraveled.
All those years, every letter the soldier had sent had been intercepted — the man standing beside her had secretly taken and destroyed them, all to make her believe she’d been abandoned… and to make her his wife.
