THE HUSBAND FORCED HIS SERIOUSLY ILL WIFE TO SIGN DIVORCE PAPERS IN FRONT OF HIS MISTRESS — THEN HIS MOTHER SUDDENLY APPEARED AND DID SOMETHING NO ONE COULD HAVE IMAGINED
On the hospital bed covered with cold white sheets, Emily Walker lay motionless, like a leaf about to fall. Her third round of treatment had ended less than two days earlier. Her body had grown visibly thinner, her skin pale and ashen, her lips cracked and dry. One of her arms still bore the mark of an IV needle that hadn’t yet faded. Every breath she took felt heavy, fragile, as if it could break at any moment.
Standing beside the bed was Daniel Walker, her husband. He was dressed neatly in a gray suit, his expression cold and detached. In his hand was a stack of papers clipped together neatly, the sharp edges mirroring his attitude.
Daniel placed the documents on the bedside table and pushed them toward Emily. His voice was firm, emotionless.
“Sign it. Consider it a release for both of us. I can’t spend the rest of my life with a sick woman like you.”
Emily’s eyes widened. For a moment, she wasn’t sure she had heard him correctly. Her heart felt as if it were being crushed. Her frail hand trembled as it instinctively clutched the thin blanket.
“What are you saying, Daniel?” she whispered hoarsely. “When we got married, you swore… that no matter sickness or health, we would never leave each other.”
Daniel let out a short, mocking laugh. There was no warmth in it at all. He turned his head toward the doorway, where a woman was standing with her arms crossed, leaning casually against the doorframe like a victor surveying the battlefield.
Her name was Sophia.
She wore a tight-fitting dress, her hair styled in soft waves. Her fingernails were painted a glaring red that gleamed under the hospital’s harsh fluorescent lights. The look she gave Emily was openly contemptuous.
Daniel tilted his head toward Sophia and spoke with a hint of ridicule in his tone.
“I was young back then. I didn’t understand life yet. Now I know exactly what I want. Sophia is the woman I want to spend my life with. Just sign it so I can take care of the paperwork.”
Emily slowly turned her head. Her gaze landed on Sophia, who responded with a crooked, triumphant smile.
Sophia stepped further into the room, planted her hands on her hips, and spoke in a sharp, smug voice.
“Just sign it. Daniel is being polite by coming here to talk to you in person. Honestly, he’s already moved in with me. The apartment downtown costs over 3,000 dollars a month, and he pays without even blinking.”
Each word struck Emily like a blade.
Her trembling hand reached for the pen Daniel had placed there. Her vision blurred. The words on the paper swam before her eyes. She tried to take a deep breath, but her throat tightened.
“You… you can really do this?” Emily murmured. “I’m lying here… not even knowing what tomorrow will bring…”
Daniel’s patience snapped. He shoved her hand aside, sending the pen clattering to the floor with a dry, hollow sound.
“Sign it quickly. I don’t have time.”
At that exact moment—
The door burst open.
A cold gust rushed in along with the rain. An elderly woman stood frozen in the doorway. Her hair was almost completely gray, soaked through by the rain and clinging to her wrinkled cheeks. She wore an old raincoat, her shoes still muddy, as if she had rushed there without stopping.
The entire room fell silent.
Daniel spun around, stunned.
“Mom?!”
It was Margaret Walker—Daniel’s mother.
No one knew when she had arrived. No one knew how long she had been standing outside listening.
Margaret didn’t speak immediately. She stepped slowly into the room, her eyes lingering on Emily’s frail body, then on the divorce papers on the table. Her lips trembled, her hands clenched until they turned white.
“What are you doing, Daniel?” she asked, her voice hoarse but cutting.
Daniel hesitated for a split second, then frowned.
“You don’t understand. This is my business.”
Sophia glanced Margaret up and down with disdain and sneered.
“Ma’am, it’s modern times now. Everyone has to think about their own future. Daniel is still young—he has his whole life ahead of him—”
SLAP!
The sound echoed sharply through the room.
Sophia staggered, clutching her cheek, unable to believe what had just happened. Daniel stood frozen, mouth agape.
Margaret’s hand trembled, but her eyes had never been so fierce.
“Be quiet. This is not your place to speak.”
She then turned to her son. Her voice cracked, but every word landed like a hammer.
“You force your wife to sign divorce papers on her hospital bed?”
“You even bring your mistress here to humiliate her?”
Daniel’s face flushed.
“You don’t know anything! She’s this sick—I can’t spend my entire life trapped like this!”
Margaret let out a bitter laugh, tears streaming down her face.
“Then let me tell you something.”
She reached into her raincoat and pulled out another stack of documents, tossing them onto the bed in front of Daniel.
“The company, the house, and the savings accounts worth over two million dollars in your name—
they all belong to me.
I only let you manage them.”
Daniel’s face went deathly pale.
“From this moment on, I’m taking everything back,” Margaret said coldly.
“And if you sign those divorce papers today, I will immediately transfer all of it to Emily.”
Sophia screamed.
“Are you crazy?!”
Margaret ignored her. She turned to Emily, her gaze softening with deep sorrow. She took Emily’s thin hand, tears falling onto the fragile skin.
“You don’t need to sign anything,” she said gently.
“If there is to be a divorce… the one who leaves with nothing will be him.”
Daniel collapsed into a chair, his lips trembling uncontrollably. For the first time in his life, he realized how far he had gone—and how high the price would be.
Emily looked at her mother-in-law, tears silently streaming down her face. She had never imagined that in her darkest moment, the person who would stand by her side would be this woman.
Outside, the rain continued to pour.
Inside the cold hospital room, the truth, betrayal, and the cost of cruelty were finally laid bare.
