The wind howled through the gaps in the helipad atop the Apex Crystal Tower. The city of Chicago below was a blur of light. Elena clutched her coat, her trembling hand resting on her eight-month pregnant belly.
Marcus, her husband—the man she had once trusted more than life itself—stood a few steps away, his face as cold as limestone.
“Marcus, please… it’s so cold. We need to go inside,” Elena sobbed.
Marcus didn’t look at her. He stared into the distance. “Stop pretending, Elena. The prenatal DNA test results were on my desk this morning. That baby isn’t mine.”
“What are you saying? That’s impossible!” Elena screamed into the wind. “Marcus, look at me! I’ve never betrayed you!”
Marcus turned, his eyes filled with disgust. “Don’t you understand? I had a vasectomy five years ago. That child… is a mistake you have to bear the consequences of.”
He turned his back and strode toward the steel door. Elena rushed after him, stumbling, her knees hitting the icy concrete floor. “Marcus! Don’t leave me and our child here! You can’t do this! I warn you, if you leave, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life!”
The door slammed shut. The sound of the mechanical lock echoed dryly. Marcus had trapped her at the top of the tower.
CLIMAX: THE UNBELIEVABLE
Hours passed. The cramping pain began to intensify. Elena realized something was wrong. Her ears started to ache, the air became incredibly thin. She looked down at her smartwatch, the numbers on the display nearly stopping her heart:
ALTITUDE: 3,000 METERS.
The Apex Crystal building was actually only 400 meters tall. How could she be at an altitude of 3000 meters? She looked over the edge of the building. Chicago had vanished. Instead, there was a vast sea of white clouds under the moonlight. The entire top of the tower had detached and was hovering like a giant spaceship in mid-air.
Suddenly, a low voice boomed from the helicopter landing pad’s loudspeaker:
“Welcome, Elena. Marcus didn’t abandon you. He just sold you.”
The steel doors opened, but it wasn’t Marcus. A group of men in pitch-black protective suits emerged. The leader removed his mask, revealing the face of Julian—her husband’s biggest business rival.
“Marcus thinks the baby isn’t his, because he doesn’t know that you’re the only one who succeeded in the ‘Genesis’ project. The child in your womb isn’t an ordinary person, Elena. It’s our billion-dollar asset.”
THE CRUEL TRUTH
It turned out that Marcus had been paid to stage an affair, aiming to drive Elena into a state of extreme panic—a necessary condition to activate a special gene code in the fetus. The 3000-meter altitude wasn’t an illusion, but a mobile airborne laboratory to evade government control.
Elena stood up, labor pains intensifying, but her eyes suddenly changed color—a strange silvery-blue. She looked directly at Julian, her voice no longer trembling but resounding like thunder:
“Marcus was right about one thing… this baby isn’t his. Nor is it your experiment.”
Just as Julian was about to step forward, an immense pressure emanated from Elena’s abdomen, shaking the entire massive structure. At 3000 meters, amidst the clouds, “something” inside Elena began to awaken.
