“DAD… MY LITTLE SISTER WON’T WAKE UP. WE HAVEN’T EATEN FOR THREE DAYS.”
THE MILLIONAIRE WAS SHOCKED.
The call came at 8:17 in the morning.
Richard Carter was sitting in a glass conference room on the thirty-second floor of Carter Holdings in downtown Dallas. Around him sat executives in tailored suits, laptops open, charts glowing on a screen.
They were discussing a $50 million acquisition.
Richard barely listened.
Then his phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Almost.
For some reason he picked up.
“Hello.”
The voice on the other end was small.
Weak.
“Dad…”
Richard frowned.
“Ethan? What happened? Why are you calling from another phone?”
Silence.
Then a shaky breath.
“Dad… Lily won’t wake up.”
Richard’s heart skipped.
“What? What do you mean? Where are you? Where’s your mom?”
“She’s not here.”
Richard straightened in his chair.
“What do you mean she’s not there?”
“She left Friday.”
The words fell like stones.
“I’m hungry,” Ethan whispered. “There’s nothing left to eat.”
For a moment, Richard Carter — a man worth hundreds of millions of dollars — couldn’t speak.
“Ethan… are you telling me you and Lily have been alone since Friday?”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t know what to do.”
The room around Richard faded.
Executives kept talking.
Slides kept changing.
But all he could hear was the sound of his ten-year-old son breathing through the phone.
“Stay where you are,” Richard said.
His voice had turned cold.
“I’m coming.”
He hung up.
Then he stood so suddenly his chair slammed backward.
“Meeting’s over.”
“Mr. Carter—”
“Now.”
No one argued.
Richard grabbed his keys and rushed out of the room.
The Drive
The elevator felt like it took forever.
Richard dialed his ex-wife.
Amanda Blake.
Straight to voicemail.
He called again.
Voicemail.
Again.
Nothing.
“Damn it!” he muttered.
The elevator doors opened.
He sprinted through the lobby, ignoring the startled looks from employees.
Outside, the Texas heat hit him like a wall.
He jumped into his black Range Rover and started the engine.
Amanda’s house was twenty-six minutes away.
He made it in sixteen.
The House
The small suburban house looked exactly the same.
Quiet.
Still.
Too still.
Richard slammed the car door and ran to the front porch.
He pounded on the door.
“Ethan! It’s Dad! Open up!”
No answer.
He tried the handle.
The door swung open.
Unlocked.
His stomach twisted.
“Ethan?”
The house smelled stale.
Like a place where no one had cooked.
No one had lived.
Then he saw him.
Ethan sat on the living room floor hugging a pillow.
His blond hair was messy.
His cheeks dirty.
His eyes swollen from crying.
His thin arms wrapped tightly around himself.
“Dad…”
His voice cracked.
“I thought you weren’t coming.”
Richard rushed forward and knelt in front of him.
“Where’s Lily?”
Ethan pointed at the couch.
Richard turned.
And his heart stopped.
Three-year-old Lily Carter lay curled on the sofa.
Her tiny body motionless.
Her skin pale.
Her lips dry and cracked.
Richard rushed over.
“Lily?”
No response.
He touched her forehead.
Burning hot.
“Jesus…”
He lifted her carefully.
Her body was limp.
Too light.
“Come on,” he said quickly. “Ethan, get up. We’re leaving.”
“Is Lily sleeping?”
“She’ll be okay.”
But Richard’s voice trembled.
“Let’s go.”
The Hospital
Richard drove like a madman.
Hazard lights flashing.
Running red lights.
Ethan sat in the back seat clutching his sister’s stuffed rabbit.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Is Mom mad?”
Richard gripped the steering wheel tighter.
“No.”
“Then why did she leave?”
He had no answer.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“I was scared.”
Richard swallowed hard.
“I know.”
Emergency Room
The ER doors burst open as Richard ran inside carrying Lily.
“Help! My daughter!”
A nurse rushed forward.
“How old is she?”
“Three.”
“What happened?”
“She hasn’t eaten properly for at least two days… maybe more. She has a fever.”
They placed Lily on a gurney.
Doctors surrounded her immediately.
A nurse gently guided Ethan aside.
“What’s your name?”
“Ethan.”
“You’re very brave.”
Richard stood frozen as they worked.
Machines beeped.
Doctors spoke quickly.
Minutes passed.
Then the doctor turned to him.
“We’re stabilizing her now.”
Richard’s chest tightened.
“Is she going to be okay?”
“She’s severely dehydrated and has a high fever. But you brought her in time.”
Richard closed his eyes.
For the first time that day, he breathed.
The Truth
Two hours later Lily slept in a hospital bed.
IV fluids running.
Ethan sat beside her.
Richard stood by the window.
The doctor approached.
“Mr. Carter?”
“Yes.”
“Your daughter is stable.”
“Thank God.”
“But we need to ask a few questions.”
Richard nodded.
“When was the last time their mother was home?”
“Friday.”
“And today is Monday.”
“Yes.”
“Do you know where she is?”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“No.”
Ethan’s Story
Later that afternoon, Ethan finally told the full story.
Friday night, Amanda left the house.
She said she was “going out for a while.”
She never came back.
The fridge had only milk and bread.
By Sunday it was gone.
Ethan tried calling her.
No answer.
Lily began to feel sick.
She stopped eating.
Then stopped waking up.
Ethan got scared.
So he found an old phone in the kitchen drawer.
And called the only number he remembered.
His father’s.
The Search
Police were contacted.
Amanda Blake was officially reported missing.
Or possibly abandoning her children.
Richard didn’t know which was worse.
Meanwhile, Lily slowly improved.
By Wednesday she was sitting up in bed.
By Thursday she smiled.
“Daddy?”
Richard almost cried.
“I’m here.”
Ethan hugged him.
“Can we go home?”
Richard hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
“But not that house.”
A New Beginning
A week later Ethan and Lily moved into Richard’s penthouse in Dallas.
A full-time nanny.
A private chef.
A huge bedroom.
Everything a billionaire father could provide.
But one night Ethan asked quietly:
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Are you going to leave too?”
Richard knelt in front of him.
“No.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
He hugged both children tightly.
And in that moment Richard Carter — the ruthless businessman who built an empire — made the most important decision of his life.
He would never again let money matter more than family.
One Month Later
Police finally located Amanda.
She had flown to Las Vegas with a man she met online.
She left her children behind.
No note.
No warning.
Just gone.
When Richard heard the news, he only shook his head.
Some people simply walked away from love.
But he never would.
Because every night now, two small voices called him from the hallway.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Can you read us a story?”
And for the first time in years…
Richard Carter was truly rich.
