I had planned to stay away for a week, handling business in another city. It was supposed to be a routine trip, the kind of work I’d done countless times before. But for some reason, this time something felt off. So, I decided to return home a day earlier than planned.
When I stepped through the door, I was hit with an eerie silence.
It was too quiet.
The lights in the living room were dim, and there was no sound of my wife, Sophie, in the kitchen preparing dinner like she usually did.
I didn’t think much of it at first. Maybe she was taking a nap.
But then I heard the muffled sound of laughter.
From upstairs.
The laughter didn’t belong to Sophie.
It wasn’t her voice.
My heart skipped a beat.
I silently moved up the stairs, the creaking of the floorboards betraying my every step. As I reached the top of the stairs, I paused, trying to calm my racing pulse.
The bedroom door was slightly ajar. Through the crack, I could see the silhouette of a man, lying on our bed. And next to him, Sophie.
I pushed the door open slowly, my breath caught in my chest.
And then, I saw it.
My best friend, James, was lying there with Sophie, both of them tangled in the sheets.
My mind went blank for a moment. I couldn’t process it.
The man I had trusted more than anyone. The woman I had married, the one I thought I could always count on.
My heart felt like it was breaking in real-time, but I refused to show it. I knew I had to act.
