U.S. men’s rugby star Perry Baker said his dream is to stand on the podium at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 37-year-old is one of the world’s best players in rugby sevens.

“It can be bronze, silver or gold, I just want to be on the podium,” Baker said during the U.S. Olympic Media Summit in New York City earlier this month.

Baker, who is from New Smyrna Beach, Florida, said he plans to hang up his cleats after the Paris Olympics.

“I still wanna be around the game. I definitely want to coach, and I feel like that’s another way to help this game grow, is like, to give back to the game,” Baker said.

Baker was on the U.S. men’s Olympic team in 2016 and 2020. Before his rugby career, he was signed by the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, but his football career was cut short due to a knee injury.

“I gave it my all so that’s what like gave me the satisfaction to be like ok I’m done chasing football because I put my all into it and it just didn’t happen,” Baker said.  “But that doesn’t mean that I’m done because now I’m like I can go be an Olympian.”

Baker was the 2019 and 2018 World Rugby Player of the Year, and he holds the title for the most career tries as an American.
