The grandson of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood has been invited for assessment for both England and GB Boxing.

But rather than strings, it is ropes for 18-year-old Leo Wood, who has won the prestigious England Boxing National Amateur Championships in Derby.

A member of Ropes and Glory Club in Chatham, Kent, Wood picked up the title for his under 57kg weight class in the competition.

He has also been informed that he has qualified to represent England in the GB Elite Three Nations in Scotland in June.

Having started boxing when he was 10, the teenager will now be aiming to follow his grandfather’s footsteps and achieve celebrity status, but through a slightly different route.

‘This is really a dream come true for me and really proves to me the value of all the hard work, the training and the commitment I’ve made,’ Wood said. ‘I will be proud to represent England and I’d love to get to the Olympics eventually and then go professional.’

Father Jamie added: ‘I could not be a prouder father. I really believe Leo has got something special and can achieve all his goals. He is focused and driven and his family will be supporting him all the way.’

Music legend Ronnie, meanwhile, was also a member of Faces and the Jeff Black Group but made his name in the Rollins Stones.

Born in London in 1947, he started his professional music journey in 1964 and got his big break with the Rolling Stones in the mid 1970s, participating in recording sessions in 1974 before being declared an official member in 1976 after Faces broke up.

Jamie was adopted by Ronnie as a youngster as one of six children after his mother, Jo, left his biological father. Leo is one of six grandchildren of the rock star.

Though the Paris Olympics will come too early for Leo to compete, he may be targeting Italy 2026.

He will soon travel up to Sheffield for assessment on the back of his success in Derby.
