The door to Emily’s room was slightly ajar, and she saw John standing across from Emily

John and Sarah, an American couple married for just two weeks, were enjoying a luxurious honeymoon at a secluded resort in Bali. Accompanying them was Emily, Sarah’s closest college friend, whom Sarah had insisted on inviting, reasoning that it would be “too sad not to have someone to share these beautiful moments with.” John reluctantly agreed.

On the first night in the private-pool villa, the atmosphere felt more awkward than romantic. Sarah excitedly told Emily about the next day’s travel plans, while John appeared restless, occasionally glancing at his wife’s best friend. After saying goodnight, Sarah, exhausted from the long flight, quickly fell asleep.

Around midnight, Sarah suddenly woke up, feeling thirsty. She quietly got out of bed and headed outside. As she walked past Emily’s bedroom door, she stopped short. The door to Emily’s room was slightly ajar, and she saw John standing across from Emily.

Sarah’s heart sank. She held her breath, pressed herself against the nearby wall, and eavesdropped.

“Em… I can’t take it anymore, Em,” John whispered, his voice pleading. “I know this is my and Sarah’s honeymoon, but… I can’t pretend anymore. I know you feel it too. From the moment you walked into the ceremony, I just… I want to be with you.”

Emily, standing with her arms crossed, looked uneasy but not surprised. “John, you know I care about you, but… you can’t do this to Sarah. This is your night. You need to go back to your room.”

John stepped closer, trying to take Emily’s hand. “Please, just one kiss. I promise I won’t do anything more. Sarah is fast asleep. Just… once, so I know this feeling isn’t a mistake.”

Emily shook her head, taking a step back. “John, no. I won’t betray Sarah like that. You need to forget this idea.”

Just then, Sarah, like a shadow, stepped fully into the room, flipping the lights on.

“What idea needs to be forgotten, John?” Her voice was ice-cold, devoid of tears, only utter astonishment.

John spun around, his face white. Emily looked at Sarah with a complex expression, a mix of sympathy and shame.

“Sarah! I… I was just…” John stammered, unable to form a coherent sentence.

“You were just… trying to make out with your wife’s best friend on your honeymoon night, weren’t you?” Sarah cut in, looking straight at Emily, then turning back to John.

💡 The Unexpected Ending

Sarah took a deep breath, and everything unfolded differently than John had expected. She didn’t cry, she didn’t scream, and she didn’t launch into a jealous attack.

She smiled, a strange, knowing smile.

“John,” she said, her tone unnervingly calm. “You’ve just made everything very clear. This is over.

John was still lost. “What’s over?”

“Our contract,” Sarah replied, gently. She turned to Emily, and this time, her smile was warmer.

“You and John, you’re both free now. Congratulations to you both. Emily, you did a great job.”

Emily, unable to hold back, burst into tears. “Sarah, I’m so sorry, I tried to stop him!”

“You don’t need to apologize,” Sarah stepped forward and hugged Emily. “It was all part of the plan.”

John stood frozen. “The plan? What plan?”

Sarah released Emily, looking at John with a cold, contemptuous gaze.

“Why do you think an intelligent, successful, and independent woman like me would marry an unremarkable man like you, John? And why do you think I deliberately invited my wonderful best friend, Emily, along on the honeymoon? I’ve been suspicious of you for a long time. You always had that look in your eyes when you looked at Emily.”

This marriage was a trap, John. I needed clear, undeniable evidence to void our prenuptial agreement without having to share a cent of the assets I’ve built. According to the special clause you signed: Should the husband engage in any act of flirtation or intimacy with a third party during the honeymoon, the marriage will be immediately annulled, and the husband will forfeit all claims to assets.

“John, you just ruined your life over ‘one kiss,’ and you’ve saved me millions of dollars in divorce proceedings. Thank you very much.”

Sarah turned, walked back to the room, and picked up her suitcase. “Emily and I are flying home tonight. As for you, John, enjoy your solo vacation, and prepare to receive the divorce papers from my lawyer. And remember, the resort’s security cameras recorded everything.”

She took Emily’s hand, and they both walked out of the room, leaving John alone in the dark night, amidst a shattered career and marriage. His honeymoon had turned into a sentence.
