After eight seasons and 12 years, Outlander officially ended with Season 8, Episode 10. But does Jamie Fraser die in the series finale? And what does the ending really mean?

Let’s take a deep dive into what happened to Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) in the series based on the books written by Diana Gabaldon.

At the end of Season 8, Episode 9, Benjamin Cleveland (Turlough Convery) stopped by Jamie and Claire’s house. “The time has come, Fraser,” he declared. “Ferguson is on the march in North Carolina. Gather your men, all you can get… You owe me, Fraser. You said so yourself.”

The dreaded Battle of Kings Mountain had arrived, and Jamie was left with little choice but to join Cleveland and accept his fate—his death during the battle, according to what Frank (Tobias Menzies) wrote in his book. But did Jamie actually die? Or did he and Claire somehow change the course of history?

Did Jamie Die in the Outlander Finale?

Long story short: Yes, Jamie died in the Outlander Season 8 finale. Or, at least he did for a while.

In Season 8, Episode 10, titled “And the World Was All Around Us,” fans were deeply concerned about Jamie. Things didn’t start out too promising, as it kicked off with Jamie writing his will.

The patriots ultimately won the Battle of Kings Mountain, just as they did in real life. When their victory over the loyalists was clear, Claire saw that Jamie was alive (after narrowly knocking Major Patrick Ferguson off his horse right at the end). She pointed out that Frank was wrong in his book, kissed Jamie, and then left to tend to the wounded.

After the battle was won, Jamie went to seek an official surrender from Ferguson, who declared, “I will never surrender,” before shooting an unsuspecting Jamie. (The patriots promptly shot and killed Ferguson in retaliation.) Immediately, Claire could sense that Jamie was gravely injured and ran back to him.

As Jamie lay bleeding to death, he told Claire, “I’m not afraid.”

“No, I am not going to sit here and watch you die,” she vowed, to which Jamie said with his dying breaths, “Forgive me, Sassenach.”

Claire stayed by Jamie’s body all night and into the next morning. Finally, Roger (Richard Rankin) came to retrieve her and gently make her face the reality that Jamie was dead. “It’s time to bury him, Claire,” he told her. “Let’s take him home.”

Claire, consumed by her grief, did not answer, but continued resting her body over Jamie’s

“He is home,” she insisted, after Roger walked away. She then lay next to Jamie on the ground and closed her eyes.

Outlander Ending, Explained

At the very end of Outlander Season 8, Episode 10, the scene switched to Jamie watching Claire through the window in the rain—just as he did all those years ago in Season 1 when Frank saw his ghost.

After disappearing when Frank approached him, Jamie arrived at Craigh na Dun and touched the stone. Purplish-blue forget-me-nots magically appeared at its base—the same ones Claire found that would cause her to time-travel for the first time.

A flashback of Jamie and Claire’s lives together played. Afterward, the final scene showed Claire still lying next to Jamie’s body after he died at the Battle of Kings Mountain. This time, however, her hair was completely white. This was a callback to the prophecy a Cherokee healer made in Season 4 that Claire would reach her full power when her hair turns completely white.

In the last moments, they both suddenly gasped and opened their eyes, and the screen went black—implying that Jamie and Claire both lived.

What Does ‘Slàinte Mhath‘ Mean in the Outlander Finale?

After the final scene, Outlander displayed a message to viewers.

“Thank you to our Fans,” it read. “Your unwavering support made this journey possible. Slàinte mhath.”

In Scottish Gaelic, slàinte mhath” means “good health,” and is often used in toasts, similarly to “cheers.”

Is there a post-credits scene in the Outlander finale?

Yes! For those who stayed through the credits, the Outlander Season 8 finale had a post-credit scene featuring a cameo from Gabaldon herself. It featured people standing in line at a bookstore while waiting for an author at a book signing.

A woman asked her to sign a copy of Outlander for her daughter, Karen. She then asked Gabaldon about a journal she spotted on the table.

“Uh, well. It’s just a wee bit of inspiration,” the author replied, jokingly suggesting that Gabaldon plagiarized the entire story from Claire’s journal.

Outlander is available to stream in its entirety on Starz.
