Britney Spears was allowed to pay her father – Mr. Jamie Spears, 71 years old – two million dollars to end the two and a half year long custody lawsuit.

According to TMZ on April 26, the source said that the dispute between Britney Spears and her father was resolved privately, and the Baby One More Time singer was not happy with the final verdict. Matthew Rosengart – Britney Spears’ lawyer – is said to have guaranteed that the lawsuit would win in favor of the singer, however, she must pay all of her father’s legal fees amounting to two million USD.

Meanwhile, Jamies Spears does not need to pay any fines or pay anything. The news agency said Britney Spears spent about four million dollars hiring Matthew Rosengart.

Interviewed with People magazine on April 27, Matthew Rosengart said that Jamie Spears’ guardianship was canceled in 2021, but only now has Britney Spears’ dream of “freedom” come true after paying announced the amount of money he demanded from 2021 to stop controlling the singer’s assets. “She is no longer involved in the courts or legal proceedings regarding this matter. Britney Spears won when the judge suspended his management and restored basic rights and civil liberties for you,” he said.

Meanwhile, Alex Weingarter – Jamies Spears’ lawyer – told People, Britney Spears’ father is happy that everything is over. “I cannot comment on any specifics because the lawsuit is confidential. He loves his child and will do everything to protect and support her,” he said. According to the Guardian , thanks to the settlement, the two avoided a clash in court with the prospect of Jamie Spears publicly opposing his daughter.

In July 2021, Britney Spears filed an application with the Los Angeles Superior Court to cancel guardianship of her father’s assets, starting a nearly three-year dispute. A few weeks later, Jamie Spears agreed to give up responsibility due to public pressure, in exchange for which he wanted his daughter to pay two million dollars including lawyer fees and other expenses. In November 2021, the court declared the singer free after 13 years of control, not requiring Britney Spears to undergo a medical examination before ending her conservatorship. All assets will be transferred to the singer’s trust fund.

In her memoir The Woman in Me (2023), Britney Spears revealed how her father used guardianship to control her life, from eating, work to children. She said she was not allowed to drive or drink coffee herself, but had to wait for her father’s permission. Britney Spears explains in the piece how guardianship can strip her of her right to live as an adult woman, turning her into a dependent child.

Britney Spears , 43 years old, is known to the audience through songs such as Baby One More Time , Oops!… I Did It Again , Toxic . Throughout her career, the singer released nine studio albums, received one Grammy award and eight Billboard awards. Regarding love, the singer went through three breakups with Jason Allen Alexander, Kevin Federline and Sam Asghari.

She has been under Jamie Spears’ custody since 2008, after the scandal of locking herself in a room with her children. The singer said that his father abused his guardianship to profit and mistreat him. Due to the controversy, at the end of 2019, the Los Angeles court granted control of decisions about Britney Spears’ personal life to someone else, leaving him only managing assets.

From 2022 until now, Britney Spears has released two singles, including Hold Me Closer – collaborating with Elton Johh – and Mind Your Business (sung with will.i.am). Hold Me Closer entered the top 10 on the global Billboard Hot 100 list, August 2023. This single marks the singer’s return after being under the guardianship of his father for 13 years. Meanwhile, the collaboration work with will.i.am was criticized by experts. According to Rolling Stone , the lyrics contain many profanities, creating a meaningless work.
