Hello, it’s me again =)). Do you admit to me that sometimes there are books/movies that I watched when I was still young and when I watch them again, they have a completely different feeling? The movie is still the same, the plot is still the same. Only you are different, more mature. As a result, the perspective and feel of the movie is completely different from the original experience. To me, Blind Side is such a movie.
The Blind Side is a film based on the book: “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game” by Michael Lewis . The story chronicles the high school years of national team football player Michael Oher. And how his adoptive family “saved” him and brought him to the path of professional sports. Goao, from the sounds of it, it sounds like a journey of striving towards success, a story about kindness and compassion, healing. But is that the truth behind it?
- A movie with white supremacists playing the role of “saviors”.
In the previous review of the movie The Intouchables , I mentioned the ” White Savior” formula . While in it, white people always play the role of savior, rescuing someone who-everyone-knows-who. Look at The Blind Side . We have Sandra Bullock playing an impossibly wonderful foster mother. The person who every time Michael is in trouble, needs help, needs “rescue” is BOOM, appears like a god and solves all problems excellently.
– Michael walking in the cold rain? – Stop the car, let Michael get in the car, and give him a place to stay for the night. Then we let them stay for dinner, then we had Thanksgiving, and then we became family. The itinerary sounds reasonable
– Michael doesn’t know how to play rugby? She shows the way to play on behalf of the coach. Even teaching the coach how to teach his students? Reasonable edge? She’s just an interior designer. How can it be compared to an experienced and well-trained coach? But let’s just close our eyes and ignore it for now. Let’s just say she understands Michael so she can do that.
– Michael is so bad at school that he is at risk of not being able to graduate to play football? Ok, she spent money to hire a teacher to tutor. Then thanks to that, you can improve your scores and graduate smoothly. Then smoothly become an excellent baseball player. It sounds like all his efforts were for nothing and the road to success was paved by her =))
Even the fact that Michael was noticed by the coaches was because of SJ – his son. She recorded a video and sent it =)). What a coincidence.
2. Blatantly demoting Michael Oher
First is about personality. The prototypical Michael Oher may be quiet and uncommunicative, but he’s not as timid and ridiculously pathetic as the movies portray him to be. Why do we have to bring down a black character even if it is the main character just to elevate the image of white people?
Second, during his childhood, he started playing sports even before he was adopted. It’s not a lump of coal that falls on the sidewalk, someone picks it up, polishes it and becomes a diamond. In addition, he also has many friends his own age and is not a lonely child who no one wants to play with until SJ plays with him.
Third, he is someone who knows how to play sports and knows the rules of the game himself, not a stupid fool who waits until his superior foster mother teaches him what is attack and what is defense. In real life, he is also close to his first coach, not superficial and distant like in the movie.
3. People of Color always play villains , bad and violent.
If you pay close attention, you can see a disgusting racism hidden under a sweet cover in The Blind Side . All people with violent and terrible tendencies are people of color. The neighbors were ready to lure Michael into addiction, threatening violence and using illegal substances. The unloving mother, who once raised Michael, wanted to abandon him. Even the NCAA employee who investigated Michael happened to be a person of color. Meanwhile, white people are the opposite. If it’s bad, it’s portrayed very faintly and prejudices are easily overlooked. How bored =))
4. Half of bread is still bread but half of the truth is no longer the truth.
What I hate most about that movie is the bending of the truth. What Michael Oher can do now is try to practice and do his best. Being adopted and supported is only part of his success. But never everything. Blatantly and blatantly negating one’s efforts just to lift another up. This is truly despicable.
You can say that this is just a movie, fictional details and pushing everything to the extreme to suit the audience’s understanding. I completely accept that. But pushing in the direction of discrimination, full of racial prejudice and rejecting all efforts of others like The Blind Side, I cannot accept.
You know, sugar-coated candies are always sweet and attractive. But eating a lot and eating quickly can easily cause tooth decay and diabetes. Is there any movie that makes you turn 180 degrees when watching it again like The Blind Side? Comment below to let me know. Thank you for reading these lines.
