The midnight rain poured relentlessly outside, blending with the suffocating roars echoing inside the cramped house. The moment Hung stepped through the door, a pungent mixture of alcohol and strange perfume assaulted Linh’s nostrils. Before she could even finish her sentence, a blinding slap sent Linh reeling backward onto the freezing floor. The bruises from last week’s beating had barely faded, only to be piled upon by new agony.

• “How dare you ask where I’ve been? Take a look at your pathetic self, no wonder I’m sick of you!”

Hung roared, pointing a finger directly at his wife of many years. On his collar, a bright red smear of lipstick remained like a blatant, mocking provocation. Linh couldn’t even cry anymore; her tears seemed to have dried up from the solitary nights spent waiting alone for her husband. Clutching her swelling cheek, she looked up at the man before her—the one who once swore eternal vows, now turned into a demon eager to strip away her last shred of dignity.

Without a shred of mercy, Hung lunged forward, grabbed Linh by the hair, and dragged her brutally out to the porch. Ignoring her choked sobbing and exhausted body, he heartlessly hurled a suitcase containing a few worn-out clothes after her, then coldly pushed her stumbling into the pouring rain.

The iron door slammed shut with a sharp bang, completely severing any remaining hope inside that house. Linh knelt in the freezing rain washing away mud and humiliation. The dim streetlamp cast a beam on her lonely, isolated back. Tonight she had lost everything: her family, her home, and the youth she had misplaced. Yet deep within those tear-filled eyes, an indomitable resilience began to sprout from the ashes of utter despair.
