THE MILLIONAIRE’S MOTHER WAS LOSING WEIGHT EVERY DAY — UNTIL HER SON ARRIVED AND SAW WHAT HIS WIFE WAS DOING…
My mother has always been my pillar. Ever since I started my companies and became well-known, she was the only one who didn’t treat me differently. But three months ago, something changed.
She started coming to my house less and less. When I did see her, it was as if she were fading away. She was pale, and her clothes were hanging off her thin frame. I asked her: “What’s wrong, Ma? Are you sick? Tell me the truth.”
She would only shrug her shoulders and say softly, “Oh, son, it’s just old age. It’s the stress.”
But I knew it wasn’t just that. My wife, Sofía, always acted affectionate whenever I was around. She would say, “Oh, mother-in-law, don’t you want some tea? You look tired.”
But the tension between them was like a knife. Sofía is one of those people who smiles with her mouth but not with her eyes. I was blind. A complete fool.
PART 1: THE BLIND ONE IN THE PALO ALTO MANSION
My mother, Martha, has always been my strongest pillar of support. When I started my software company in a cramped garage in Silicon Valley, she mortgaged her retirement savings to buy me my first server. Since I became a tech millionaire, a Forbes magazine cover star, she’s the only one who hasn’t treated me any differently. In her eyes, I’m still the little boy who loves apple pie.
But three months ago, things started to change in a terrifying way.
She started visiting my Palo Alto mansion less and less. Each time I saw her, her vitality seemed to be fading. She was pale, her wrinkled skin clinging to her bones, and her old clothes now looked ridiculously baggy on her frail, sickly body.
I took her ice-cold hands and pressed her, “What’s wrong, Mom? Are you sick? Are you hiding something from me? Please tell me the truth.”
She just shrugged, avoided my gaze, and whispered, “Oh, son, it’s just old age. It’s because I’m stressed and can’t eat much.”
But I knew it wasn’t just that. My wife, Sofía, always acted perfectly affectionate whenever I was home. A former Miami model, she always appeared glamorous and radiant. In front of me, Sofía would always put her arm around my mother’s shoulder: “Oh, my dear mother-in-law, wouldn’t you like some reishi mushroom tea I made? You look so tired, let me take care of you.”
But whenever the three of us were in the same room, the tension between them was so thick it could be cut with a knife. Sofía was the type who smiled with her mouth but never with her eyes. Her gaze towards my mother always held a coldness that I, in my foolishness and busyness, had failed to notice. I had been blinded by a blind love for a woman who appeared perfect on the surface.
PART 2: THE CANCELLED FLIGHT AND THE TRUTH IN THE GREENHOUSE
One Friday afternoon, I had an urgent business trip to Seattle. According to the schedule, I was supposed to stay there for the rest of the weekend. But a sudden snowstorm hit Washington state, canceling all flights. I decided to drive home from San Francisco airport without notice, intending to surprise Sofía.
Entering the house, the silence was unusual. The servants had been given the weekend off. I took off my coat and tiptoed down the marble hallway.
A sharp voice came from the rose greenhouse in the backyard. It was Sofía’s voice. But it wasn’t the sweet voice she usually used with me, but a hissing, cruel, and venomous tone.
“Eat, you stubborn old hag. Or do you want me to dump this soup straight over your head?”
My heart skipped a beat. I held my breath, cowering behind the reinforced glass wall, peeking inside.
The sight that met my eyes made my blood boil, but at the same time, it froze me in place.
Sofía was sitting in a luxurious wicker chair, leisurely cutting a piece of steak that smelled strongly of butter and garlic. Opposite her was my mother. She was huddled on a backless stool. In front of my mother wasn’t a decent plate of food, but a watery bowl of soup, rancid and with a strange chemical smell, and a piece of dry, moldy bread.
“Do you think you can kill me slowly without Arthur noticing?” My mother whispered, her voice weak but full of pride.
Sofía burst into a fit of laughter, tossing her fork down on the table. “You foolish old woman. These nerve-suppressing and appetite-suppressing drugs are very expensive. Arthur is too busy to realize it. He just thinks you’re wasting away with old age. See? You’ve lost almost 15 pounds in the last three months. In just one more month, the doctor will diagnose you with neurasthenia and dementia.”
Sofía pushed a contract toward my mother, tossing a pen along with it.
“Sign this paper transferring the 20% founding shares that Arthur stupidly put in your name. Sign it, and I’ll give you a decent meal. Otherwise, you’ll only have water to survive this weekend. Crying to Arthur is useless, because there’s no evidence, and he’s madly in love with me.”
I stood there speechless. The woman I call my wife is poisoning and starving my own mother, all for the sake of the stock assets I entrusted to her as a safety net. This cruelty surpasses all human imagination.
I gripped the doorknob, ready to storm in, tear up the contract, and throw that devil out of the house. But before I could push the door open, my mother did something that made me stop.
PART 3: THE TWIST – THE MOVE OF AN ORDINARY MOTHER
My mother didn’t cry. She slowly lifted her head. Her usual weakness, trembling, and forbearance suddenly vanished. Her gaze at Sofía was now sharp and frighteningly calm.
“Do you think I lost 15 pounds because of your cheap poison, Sofía?”
My mother spoke, her voice clear and distinct. She reached into the pocket of her oversized sweater and pulled out a small glass vial filled with nerve-inhibiting pills.
The same thing that Sofía had secretly been mixing into her food for the past three months.
Sofía froze, the smile on her lips vanishing. “You… how could you…”
“Do you think I’m some senile old woman who only knows how to bake apple pies?” My mother sneered. “Thirty years ago, before I retired to be a housewife, I was the Chief Accountant of the anti-fraud audit department. The first time you forced me to drink that bitter soup, I spat it out the moment you turned your back. I starved myself, I cut back on my food to look emaciated, so you would believe that your cruel plan was working.”
Sofía jumped to her feet, her beautiful face now contorted with anger and fear. “You dare to deceive me? So what? If you don’t sign, I’ll forge your signature myself!”
“You don’t need to forge your signature,” my mother pushed the transfer document back towards Sofía. “Because you’ve already signed something far more important.”
My mother pointed to the old pearl brooch she always wore on her chest.
“A tiny camera hidden inside the pearl. Every act of starvation, every threat, and your entire confession about poisoning me… all of it was streamed live to Arthur’s company’s server system.”
My mother delivered another devastating blow. “Not only that, my dear daughter-in-law. To gather evidence of you transferring money from Arthur’s company to Cayman accounts to prepare for your escape after seizing the shares, I needed your safe’s password. By making myself thinner, I bypassed the infrared sensors on your office’s ventilation vents on the nights you were away.”
Everything exploded in my mind. My mother was not a victim. She had used her own body and life as bait to drag this devil out into the light, protecting me from the ultimate deception. A spectacular power struggle unfolded right in my own home.
“You monster!” Sofía shrieked, grabbing a plate and intending to throw it at my mother.
CRASH!
I kicked open the glass door and stormed in, seething with rage.
PART 4: THE PUNISHMENT
Sofía spun around. Seeing me, the plate fell from her hand and shattered on the floor. Her face was deathly pale, her lips trembling.
“Arthur… you… when did you get back? Your mother… she’s delirious, she’s gone mad!” she stammered, trying to salvage the act of a pitiful wife.
I walked over, not even glancing at her, and went straight to my mother. I took off my expensive suit jacket and gently draped it over her frail shoulders.
“I heard it all,” I said, my voice choked with pain and regret. I turned to look at Sofía, my eyes icy cold. “You’re not just a con artist. You’re an attempted murderer. The police are on their way. The security cameras in this glasshouse aren’t broken, Sofía.”
“Arthur, please! You love me! She framed me!” Sofía collapsed to her knees, clinging to my legs and sobbing.
I coldly pushed her away. “The only person I love and trust in this house is the woman sitting here. You underestimated a mother’s love, and that was the last mistake of your life.”
Less than ten minutes later, the sirens of police cars blared outside the villa. Sofía was handcuffed and escorted away in utter panic and humiliation. The evidence my mother gathered was enough to send her to prison for decades for extortion, financial fraud, and attempted murder.
THE END: RESURRECTION FROM THE ASHES
That evening, the large mansion finally returned to its usual peace.
I personally went into the kitchen and cooked my mother’s favorite chicken and mushroom soup – a hot, hearty meal filled with love. When I brought the bowl of soup to the dining room, my mother had already showered and was wearing comfortable pajamas. Although her body was still thin, her eyes had regained the warmth and gentleness they once had.
I sat down opposite her, tears streaming down my cheeks. “I’m sorry, Mom. I’m a fool, a blind fool. I let you suffer that torment alone.”
My mother smiled, reaching out her thin hand to wipe away my tears. “You fool. I’ve protected you since you were born, and I’ll continue to do so until my last breath. Money can buy many things in Silicon Valley, but it can’t buy loyalty, and certainly not a mother.”
In the days that followed, I spent most of my time at home caring for her. With the support of the best nutritionists, my mother gradually regained her weight and health.
The cruelty and treacherous schemes were swept away from my life. In return, I realized a profound truth: Life’s biggest twist isn’t the most sophisticated scams, but the boundless power of motherhood – a silent weapon that can crush any evil force.
