She Found Hundreds of Photos of Her Daughter Hidde...

She Found Hundreds of Photos of Her Daughter Hidden Behind the Closet — Then a Voice Called “Mom” From the Darkness

The Room Behind the Closet

Claire Morgan was sitting on the edge of her bed when her phone buzzed.

It was 10:47 p.m.

An unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Then another message appeared.

DON’T LET YOUR HUSBAND INTO YOUR DAUGHTER’S ROOM TONIGHT.

Claire stared at the screen.

Her husband, Mark, was downstairs.

Their ten-year-old daughter, Sophie, was already in bed.

A second message arrived.

CHECK THE CAMERA IN HER ROOM.

Claire’s heart began pounding.

She opened the security camera app.

Sophie was asleep.

Everything looked normal.

Her pink blanket was pulled up to her chin. Her night-light was glowing beside the bed.

Then Claire noticed something.

The closet door was slightly open.

She knew she had closed it earlier.

She rushed upstairs.

“Sophie?”

Her daughter opened her eyes.

“Mom?”

“Stay here.”

Claire walked toward the closet.

She pulled the door open.

Clothes.

Shoes.

Nothing else.

She searched behind the hanging clothes but found nothing.

Then Mark appeared at the bedroom door.

“What are you doing?”

Claire turned.

“Did you open Sophie’s closet?”

Mark frowned.

“No.”

“You’re sure?”

“Claire, it’s almost eleven. Why would I be opening her closet?”

His expression changed.

“Are you okay?”

Claire didn’t answer.

The phone buzzed again.

HE’S LYING.

She looked at Mark.

He noticed the phone in her hand.

“Who keeps texting you?”

“I don’t know.”

“Give me the phone.”

Claire stepped backward.

“No.”

Mark’s face hardened.

“Claire.”

She suddenly remembered something.

There was a small camera inside Sophie’s bedroom.

A camera Mark had installed years ago.

She opened the recording history.

The previous night appeared.

At 2:13 a.m., the closet door opened.

Claire watched the footage.

Mark walked into the room.

He looked around.

Then he moved the clothes aside.

He pressed something behind the wall.

A section of the closet moved.

Claire stopped breathing.

There was a hidden doorway.

She looked at Mark.

He was completely still.

“What is that?”

Mark said nothing.

Claire pushed past him.

She moved the clothes aside and found the mechanism.

The hidden door opened.

Behind it was a narrow staircase leading downward.

Claire grabbed her phone.

“Call the police,” Mark said quietly.

She turned around.

“What?”

“Don’t go down there.”

His voice was different now.

Not angry.

Terrified.

Claire looked at him.

“What have you been hiding?”

Mark lowered his head.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

“I didn’t know how.”

Claire stepped onto the staircase.

Mark grabbed her arm.

“Claire, please.”

She pulled away.

“No.”

She went downstairs.

At the bottom was a small room.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Hundreds of them.

All of Sophie.

At school.

At the playground.

Sleeping.

Eating breakfast.

Getting into the car.

Claire’s stomach turned.

There were photographs of Sophie from every year of her life.

And some were taken from inside their own house.

Then Claire saw something that made her blood run cold.

On one wall, written in black marker, were the words:

I HAVE BEEN WATCHING HER FOR TEN YEARS.

Claire turned around.

Mark was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

“Who did this?”

He didn’t answer.

“WHO?”

Mark whispered:

“Someone I couldn’t stop.”

Claire looked at the photographs again.

“Who?”

Before he could answer, her phone buzzed.

Another message.

ASK HIM ABOUT THE NIGHT SOPHIE WAS BORN.

Claire’s face went pale.

“What happened the night Sophie was born?”

Mark closed his eyes.

“Claire…”

“What happened?”

He finally spoke.

“Sophie wasn’t supposed to survive.”

Claire stared at him.

“What?”

“She was born prematurely. The doctors said she wouldn’t make it through the night.”

Claire remembered that night.

The hospital.

The machines.

Mark crying beside her.

The doctor telling them to prepare themselves.

But Sophie survived.

Claire had always considered it a miracle.

Mark continued.

“After she was born, someone broke into the hospital.”

Claire’s blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?”

“Someone tried to take her.”

“Who?”

Mark looked toward the photographs.

“My father.”

Claire stared at him.

“You told me your father died before we met.”

“He did.”

“What does that mean?”

Mark swallowed.

“My father had a daughter before me.”

Claire frowned.

“I don’t understand.”

“He believed Sophie belonged to our family.”

“Why?”

Mark looked at her.

“Because your family and mine were connected long before we met.”

Claire stepped backward.

Then she noticed an old photograph on the table.

It showed a young woman holding a baby.

The woman was Claire’s mother.

Claire picked it up.

“What is this?”

Mark whispered:

“That baby was you.”

Claire’s hands began shaking.

“What?”

“Your mother had you when she was seventeen. She gave you up temporarily because she couldn’t raise you. My father was the man who helped arrange the adoption.”

Claire stared at him.

“I was adopted?”

“Yes.”

She felt dizzy.

“You knew?”

“I found out years ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Claire looked around the room.

“And these photographs?”

Mark’s eyes filled with tears.

“My father became obsessed with you after he discovered you had married me.”

Claire froze.

“He watched you?”

“For years.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I thought he was dead.”

Mark pulled a small envelope from his pocket.

“He died three months ago.”

Claire opened it.

Inside was a photograph of an old man.

On the back was a handwritten note:

She’s finally where she belongs.

Claire looked at Mark.

“Then who has been sending me the messages?”

Mark’s face suddenly changed.

He looked terrified.

“I don’t know.”

Claire’s phone buzzed again.

This time there was a photograph attached.

It was a picture of Claire standing inside the secret room.

The photograph had been taken just seconds earlier.

Claire slowly looked toward the ceiling.

There was another camera.

Someone was watching them.

Then another message appeared:

YOU FOUND THE ROOM. NOW FIND THE PERSON WHO BUILT IT.

Claire looked at Mark.

He whispered:

“There’s something else I never told you.”

“What?”

Mark pointed toward the far wall.

“There isn’t only one hidden room.”

A loud click came from behind them.

Another section of the wall began sliding open.

Claire stood frozen.

And from somewhere in the darkness beyond it, they heard a child’s voice.

“Mom?”

Claire’s heart stopped.

It was Sophie.

But Sophie was upstairs.

The voice came again.

“Mommy… help me.”

Claire grabbed Mark’s hand.

Together, they stared into the darkness.

And for the first time, Claire realized the person who had been watching her family for ten years might not have been trying to hurt Sophie.

They might have been trying to protect her from someone already living inside their house.
