Dr. Elias’s Final Photo
The story takes place in a dilapidated emergency room illuminated by flickering fluorescent lights—a sharp contrast to the modern hospital setting. Yet, the same suffocating tension fills the air.
The protagonist is Dr. Elias, an elderly man with snow-white hair and a warm smile. He is fighting with all his might to save Maya, a young woman critically injured in an explosion. She lies on a steel gurney, her body covered in blood.
Although Maya has made it past the initial crisis, Dr. Elias knows her time is running out. He whispers softly, “I’m sorry, Maya. I did everything I could.”
Maya smiles faintly, having accepted her fate. “Don’t worry, Doctor. I know.”
As Dr. Elias speaks with Maya, a tall police officer named Alex strides into the trauma room. He has been hunting Maya for a long time, convinced she is linked to a criminal syndicate.
Alex approaches the gurney and demands, “Where are they?”
Maya closes her eyes, refusing to answer.
Dr. Elias steps in. “Officer, Maya is extremely weak. Do not harass her.”
Alex glares at the old doctor. “Get out of the way, old man.”
Dr. Elias doesn’t budge. He stands firmly between Alex and Maya, determined to protect his patient.
Furious, Alex draws his gun. “I’m warning you, Doctor. Step aside or I’ll shoot.”
Dr. Elias holds his ground, looking Alex dead in the eye. “I am a doctor. It is my duty to protect my patient.”
Just as Alex prepares to pull the trigger, the doors burst open. A young woman named Anya rushes into the room. She is Maya’s older sister.
Anya runs to Maya’s side. “Maya!”
Alex freezes, caught completely off guard. “Anya?”
Anya looks at Alex, pleading, “Don’t hurt them, Alex. Please.”
It turns out Alex is in love with Anya and has been trying to protect her all along. But Anya knew about Maya’s ties to the syndicate and feared Alex would harm her sister.
Alex lowers his weapon. “Why are you here?”
“Because I knew where Maya would be,” Anya replies softly.
Dr. Elias looks at the two sisters, realizing that Maya is finally safe.
Shortly after, Dr. Elias passes away. The final photo ever taken of him captured the exact moment he stood shielding Maya—a photograph that went on to become an enduring symbol of courage and selflessness.
PART 2: The Syndicate’s Reckoning
Alex holstered his gun completely, his hands trembling as he looked at Anya. The flickering fluorescent light above buzzed loudly, casting harsh shadows across the room.
“You knew?” Alex asked, his voice cracking. “You knew about the syndicate this whole time?”
Anya stepped between Alex and the gurney, her back to her dying sister. “The explosion wasn’t an accident, Alex. The syndicate planted the charge because Maya tried to pull out. She came to Dr. Elias because he was the only one who wouldn’t report her to the corrupt precinct.”
Alex took a step back, the truth hitting him like a physical blow. The precinct commander—the very man who had assigned him to track Maya down—had been receiving monthly payoffs from the syndicate for over three years.
“They didn’t send me here to arrest her,” Alex whispered, realizing the horrifying reality. “They sent me to make sure she didn’t survive the night.”
Before anyone could speak, the heavy metal doors at the end of the hallway rattled. Heavy footsteps echoed toward Trauma Room 2.
Dr. Elias, despite his fading strength, reached out from his stool and pressed a hidden emergency button beneath the stainless steel counter. A loud, piercing lockdown siren began to blare throughout the hospital, triggering automatic steel shutters that slammed down over the main entrances, sealing the room off from the hallway.
“The federal authorities… have been notified,” Dr. Elias rasped, a faint smile touching his lips. “Their encrypted server… received Maya’s full testimony… five minutes ago.”
Through the reinforced glass window of the door, two armed men in tactical gear appeared, realizing they were locked out. Seconds later, distant sirens echoed from the street outside as federal agents closed in on the building.
Alex looked down at Dr. Elias, then at the two sisters holding hands on the gurney. He pulled his police badge off his belt and tossed it onto the instrument tray alongside the bloody scalpels.
“I’m done taking orders from them,” Alex said. He drew his sidearm again, this time turning toward the sealed door to guard the entrance. “Nobody touches anyone in this room.”
Maya reached up and weakly squeezed her sister’s hand one last time. “Thank you, Doctor…” she whispered.
Dr. Elias nodded slowly, his eyes gently closing as he slumped back against the wall, his breathing finally coming to a peaceful rest—knowing that in his final hour, he had held the line.
