NO BRIDE WOULD STAY WITH THE SCARRED MOUNTAIN MAN OF THE HILLS — UNTIL THE OVERWEIGHT WOMAN EVERYONE LAUGHED AT CHOSE HIM, AND UNCOVERED THE DARK REASON THE OTHERS VANISHED
Part 1: The Curse of the Black Mist Mountains
The town of Oakhaven, nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, was always shrouded in an eerie atmosphere. Legend says that at the highest peak of the Black Mist, a dilapidated wooden shack served as the dwelling place of Elias Thorne – the “Mountain Man” shunned by the villagers.
Elias wasn’t a savage, but his face was a terrifying reminder of his past. A long scar ran from his forehead to his chin, causing one of his eyes to squint menacingly. Villagers said he’d been struck by lightning; others rumored he’d been attacked by a raging bear. Three girls from the surrounding area had been “sold” to him by their families through letter-based marriage contracts, but none lasted more than a week. They said that every seven days they would disappear without a trace, and Elias was always the only one to return to town to report that they had “left on their own accord because they could not bear the loneliness.”
But no one believed him. Rumors circulated that he had killed them and buried their bodies under the old pine trees.
In town, there was another woman equally ostracized: Clara Miller. At twenty-eight, Clara possessed a massive, oversized figure, making her the target of cruel gossip from the children and the contempt of the slender women. They called her “a walking wooden barrel,” and no one in Oakhaven wanted to see her.
One day, when dire poverty forced her father to pay off his debts, Clara overheard whispers: “The Mountain Man is looking for a wife again. Whoever agrees will have their family debt forgiven.”
The whole town burst into laughter when they saw Clara, in her tight, coarse cloth dress, silently climb into the cart heading toward the summit of Black Mist. “Looks like she’s chosen her own grave,” a malicious neighbor whispered.
### Part 2: The Man Who Wasn’t a Monster
As Clara stepped through the door of the wooden hut, the scent of dry pine and herbs filled her nostrils. Elias Thorne stood there, his tall figure like a god of darkness. He looked at her, unsurprised, one eye closed, the other filled with profound sadness.
“You know?” he asked in a deep voice. “The other three ran away. They were afraid, they despised this scar. You will too. But stay here for one night; tomorrow I’ll take you down the mountain.”
Clara didn’t back. She looked straight at him, her brown eyes unwavering. “I’ve spent my whole life living with the contempt of others, Mr. Thorne. A scar on my face doesn’t frighten me, but solitude does. I will stay.”
For seven days, a miracle had blossomed. Elias wasn’t a monster. He was a refined man who spent his days carving wooden falcons and reading ancient Latin books. Clara, with her large hands and extraordinary strength, had transformed the desolate hut into a vibrant, colorful home.
They didn’t speak much, but each other’s presence was like a balm for their emotional scars. On the seventh night, as the fog enveloped the hut, Elias took Clara’s hand. “Tomorrow, you must leave. There are forces on this mountain… not meant for you.”
“What forces?” Clara asked. “What are you hiding?”
Elias didn’t answer. He went outside, leaving Clara alone with burning curiosity.
### Part 3: The Twist Under the Pine Trees
That night, Clara couldn’t sleep. She saw Elias stealthily carrying a lantern, heading towards the cliff behind the house. With unexpected agility for a large woman, she silently followed.
She saw Elias stop before a large rock. He pressed on a ledge, and an underground passage appeared. Clara held her breath and slid down.
Below the cliff was a secret room. And there, she was shocked to see the three girls who had “run away” years ago huddled together, their limbs carefully bandaged, being cared for by people in white coats.
They hadn’t disappeared. They were being treated!
A man entered the room. It was the respected doctor of Oakhaven – Dr. Silas Vane. But this time, his face lacked its usual kindness.
“You’ve done well, Thorne,” Silas Vane sneered. “These women all suffer from the strange disease I’m researching. Thank you for bringing them here, as per the contract. After they ‘disappear,’ I’ll declare them dead in a mountain accident, and the insurance will go into my pocket.”
Elias Thorne trembled, gripping the axe tightly. “I told you, this is the last time! This girl – Clara – she’s a good person. I won’t let you touch her!”
“You have no choice!” Vane pulled out a pistol. “Why do you think you have this scar? I caused it when you tried to stop me years ago. You’re just a puppet trapped on this mountain guarding my ‘laboratory,’ Thorne!”
Clara,
Hiding behind wooden crates, she almost held her breath. It turned out Elias wasn’t the murderer. He was a silent hero, controlled by the villain through threats, forced to lure outcasts up the mountain for Vane to “experiment” with his horrific drugs, then fake their deaths.
### Part 4: The Rise of the Radiant Flower
Anger blazed in Clara’s chest. She knew that if she appeared, Vane would kill both of them. She looked around, seeing the flammable chemical containers Vane used to make the drugs.
With precise calculation, Clara grabbed a bottle of concentrated acid and hurled it at Vane’s guards. In their panic, she leaped from the shadows, her massive frame becoming a heavy weapon. Using the strength of a woman accustomed to manual labor, she lifted a wooden table and slammed it into the nearest guard.
Elias, seeing Clara’s reckless act, snapped back to reality. He roared like a real bear, lunging forward and knocking the gun out of Vane’s hand.
The battle in the underground cave was chaotic. Clara, with fearless courage, used ropes to tie Vane to a stone pillar before he could react.
The next morning, the townspeople of Oakhaven were astonished to see Elias Thorne descending the mountain, followed by the three girls who were presumed dead, and behind them, a majestic Clara, like a queen, escorting Dr. Silas Vane.
The truth was revealed. The malicious rumors vanished, replaced by the shame of those who had mocked them. Silas Vane was imprisoned, and the poor girls were returned to their families.
### Part 5: Dawn on the Black Mist Mountain
Three years later.
On the Black Mist Mountain, the rickety wooden hut was gone. In its place stood a sturdy stone house, with roses blooming profusely around the porch.
Clara stood in the flower garden, her figure still full, but her eyes shone with happiness. Elias stood beside her, the scar on his face no longer a source of fear, but a symbol of a man who had overcome darkness to find light.
They were no longer ridiculed by others. They had become a symbol of sincerity. Many people from the town below regularly came up the mountain, not to mock them, but to seek them – a wise woman and a brave man – for advice on life.
“People used to laugh at us,” Elias said, placing a kiss on Clara’s hair. “They said we were the outcasts of Oakhaven.”
Clara laughed, a laugh that echoed through the valley. “They were wrong, Elias. Sometimes, the most rejected things are the most precious. Because in the darkness, we found each other, and found our own light.”
Under the glorious sunrise of the Appalachian Mountains, they held hands tightly, no longer outcasts, but masters of their own happiness. The truth is never buried, just as true love is never forgotten amidst the towering, verdant peaks.
