THE SHADOW IN THE LIVING ROOM
That night, I came home late.
The company had organized a quarterly celebration at an elegant Italian restaurant in downtown Chicago. The party lasted longer than expected. When I finally stepped outside the restaurant, my phone read 12:17 a.m.
The October wind was freezing.
I pulled my coat tighter and walked quickly toward the parking lot. The city was still bright at midnight, but the streets were much quieter. After a long day and a few glasses of wine, my head felt slightly light.
I just wanted to go home.
Home.
A two-story house in a quiet suburb. My husband and I—Daniel Carter—had bought it three years ago for $420,000. When we signed the papers, Daniel lifted me in the empty living room and spun me around, laughing.
“Emily,” he said, “this is where we’ll raise our kids.”
I still remember how happy I felt that day.
But marriage, as people often say, is never exactly like it is in the movies.
Lately Daniel had been extremely busy. He worked as a financial manager for a logistics company and often came home late or traveled for work.
We were fine.
At least… I thought we were.
It took about twenty minutes to drive home. When my car finally pulled into the driveway, the neighborhood was almost completely silent. The yellow streetlights cast long shadows across the empty road.
I turned off the engine, grabbed my purse, and stepped out.
But as I passed the living room window, I suddenly froze.
There was light inside.
I frowned.
Daniel should have been asleep by now.
Earlier that evening he told me he had an early meeting with a client at 7 a.m.
Maybe he forgot to turn off the lights.
Or maybe he was watching TV.
I didn’t think much about it.
I opened the front door.
The house was quiet.
Only a dim yellow light from the living room spilled into the hallway.
I stepped inside and gently closed the door behind me.
“Daniel?” I called softly.
No answer.
I placed my purse on the shelf.
And then I saw it.
In the middle of the living room… there were two shadows.
A tall man.
And a young woman.
The man stood with his back toward me.
His arms were wrapped tightly around the woman.
She was wearing a thin nightgown.
Her long hair fell down her back.
They stood very close together.
Close enough that I didn’t need to guess what was happening.
My heart started pounding.
In that moment, my mind went blank.
Only one thought appeared:
Daniel was holding another woman in my house.
A chill ran down my spine.
Anger, pain, and panic rose inside me all at once.
I stepped forward.
The wooden floor creaked softly.
The man moved slightly.
But he didn’t turn around.
I clenched my fists.
“Daniel.”
My voice came out hoarse.
Both figures froze.
The woman turned her head toward me.
But the light in the room was too dim for me to see her face clearly.
I walked quickly toward the light switch.
And turned it on.
Bright white light flooded the room.
The next moment…
My legs almost gave out.
It wasn’t Daniel.
The man standing in the living room was not my husband.
It was a man in his mid-fifties.
Salt-and-pepper hair.
A face so familiar it made my breath catch.
I stammered.
“…Dad?”
The man turned around.
He stared at me, eyes wide.
“Emily?”
I stood there in shock.
Yes.
It was Robert Carter.
Daniel’s father.
My father-in-law.
And the young woman in his arms…
When she fully turned toward me, the shock only deepened.
She looked about twenty-five.
Blonde hair.
Heavy makeup.
And I knew exactly who she was.
“Tiffany…?” I whispered.
She stared at me, her face turning pale.
Tiffany Adams.
Daniel’s secretary.
I had met her a few times at the office when I stopped by to bring Daniel lunch.
She had always seemed polite.
Young.
Pretty.
But why…
Why was she in my house?
In a nightgown?
And being held by my father-in-law at midnight?
The room fell into a heavy silence.
Tiffany was the first to step away from Robert.
She backed up two steps, clearly nervous.
“Emily… I… I can explain…”
“Be quiet.”
I had never spoken to anyone with such a cold voice before.
I turned to Robert.
He looked uncomfortable.
“Emily… this isn’t what it looks like…”
“What are you doing in my house?” I asked.
Robert swallowed.
“Daniel asked me… to check on something.”
I laughed.
A dry, humorless laugh.
“Check on what? Hugging your son’s secretary at midnight?”
Robert’s face flushed.
Tiffany quickly said,
“It’s not what you think—”
I turned sharply toward her.
“Then tell me what it is.”
“You’re wearing a nightgown in my house at midnight, and my father-in-law is holding you.”
“What exactly am I supposed to think?”
Tiffany bit her lip.
Robert sighed.
He sat down on the sofa.
In just a few seconds, he seemed to age ten years.
“Emily… you should sit down.”
“No.”
I crossed my arms.
“You can talk right here.”
Robert glanced at Tiffany.
She nodded weakly.
He turned back to me.
“Daniel… is in trouble.”
My heart skipped a beat.
“What kind of trouble?”
Robert hesitated for a moment.
Then he said quietly,
“Money.”
I frowned.
“Daniel’s company is investigating a financial discrepancy.”
“About $300,000.”
The blood in my veins seemed to freeze.
“What?”
Robert continued in a heavy voice.
“The money was transferred out of the company account over the past six months.”
“All the transactions went through… Daniel’s computer.”
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.”
Daniel would never do that.
Robert said slowly,
“Daniel told me he didn’t do it.”
“But the evidence… points to him.”
I looked at Tiffany.
A thought suddenly flashed in my mind.
“You.”
Tiffany blinked.
“Me?”
“You’re Daniel’s secretary.”
“You have access to all his files and transfers.”
Tiffany shook her head quickly.
“No! I didn’t steal anything!”
Robert sighed.
“Emily… that’s why we’re here.”
I looked at him.
Robert continued,
“Daniel asked me to meet Tiffany tonight.”
“At your house.”
I frowned.
“Why here?”
“Daniel thinks… someone might be watching.”
My head started spinning.
“I still don’t understand.”
Robert looked straight into my eyes.
“Emily.”
“There’s a possibility… the person who took the money… isn’t Tiffany.”
I froze.
“Then who?”
Robert didn’t answer immediately.
He stared at me for a long moment.
Then he said something that felt like the ground collapsing beneath me.
“Daniel suspects… you.”
The room went silent.
I could hear my heartbeat.
Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
I laughed.
“You’re joking, right?”
Robert didn’t smile.
“Your bank account received $120,000 three months ago.”
The blood drained from my face.
“That was… my aunt’s inheritance.”
Robert nodded.
“Daniel said the same thing.”
“But the company is investigating.”
“And Tiffany discovered that several transfers from Daniel’s computer were made at times when Daniel wasn’t at the office.”
I stared at Tiffany.
She spoke softly.
“There were two times… when you came to the office looking for Daniel.”
“He wasn’t there.”
“But the system recorded transactions… right afterward.”
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“Are you accusing me of stealing?”
Tiffany shook her head quickly.
“No… I’m just…”
Robert stood up.
“Emily, we need the truth.”
“Daniel could go to prison.”
I looked at him.
Then at Tiffany.
Another thought appeared.
A small detail.
But a terrifying one.
I spoke slowly.
“Where is Daniel?”
Robert fell silent.
Tiffany looked down at the floor.
My heart started racing.
“Where is he?”
Robert sighed.
“He’s… staying at a hotel.”
“His lawyer advised him not to stay at home for now.”
I looked around the room.
The house I had always believed was the safest place in the world.
Suddenly felt unfamiliar.
I spoke quietly.
“Then why is she wearing a nightgown?”
Tiffany blushed.
“Daniel… asked me to stay here.”
“To check his computer.”
“We were reviewing the transactions.”
Robert nodded.
“And we just discovered something.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
Robert said,
“The transactions didn’t only come from Daniel’s computer.”
“There was another device.”
“Logged in from this house’s Wi-Fi network.”
The room fell silent again.
I stared at Robert.
“You mean…”
He said slowly,
“Someone used your home network to move the money.”
A chill ran through my body.
A terrifying thought appeared.
I whispered,
“…Someone like who?”
Robert looked at me.
“We don’t know yet.”
Tiffany spoke quietly.
“But one thing is certain.”
“That person… knows Daniel’s system very well.”
I looked toward the staircase.
Darkness covered the second floor.
And in that moment…
I suddenly remembered something.
Three months ago…
Daniel had hired someone to fix the internet.
A stranger.
He stayed in our house for nearly three hours.
I turned quickly.
“Dad.”
Robert looked at me.
“I think… we might be looking at the wrong person.”
“Maybe the person who stole the money…”
“…has been inside this house for a long time.”
Robert frowned.
“Who do you mean?”
I glanced toward the dark hallway.
And whispered,
“The man who installed the Wi-Fi.”
At that exact moment…
A soft noise came from upstairs.
All three of us looked up.
Footsteps.
Very light.
As if…
someone was still inside the house.
