THE SECRET AT THE MAID’S FEET
I never thought that waking up in the middle of the night would shake my marriage the way it did.
My name is David Miller. I’m thirty-two years old and work as a construction engineer for a company in Houston, Texas. A year ago, I married Anna Miller, a woman three years younger than me who works in marketing for a fashion company.
We dated for nearly two years before getting married.
Anna was the kind of woman people easily fall for the moment they meet her. She was beautiful, charming, and had a way of making everyone around her feel comfortable.
After the wedding, we bought a small house in the suburbs for about $380,000. It wasn’t a luxurious house, but to us it was the beginning of a family.
Last month, Anna told me something that made me happier than I had ever been in my life.
She was pregnant.
It would be our first child.
But Anna’s health wasn’t very strong. Since becoming pregnant, she had often felt tired and dizzy, and the doctor advised her to rest as much as possible.
So I decided to hire a housemaid to help reduce the workload for her.
A friend of mine, Mark, recommended a woman named Grace Tran.
“She’s been working as a housemaid for many years,” Mark told me. “She’s careful, hardworking, and good with children.”
I thought a recommendation from someone I knew would be more reliable than hiring a stranger online.
So I contacted Grace.
Two days later, she came to meet me.
Grace was in her early forties, small in stature, soft-spoken, and she gave the impression of being very honest. She had worked for several families in the area before.
We agreed on a salary of $1,200 per month, including meals and accommodation.
Grace started working that same day.
When Grace arrived to begin her job, Anna was still staying at her mother’s house for a few days to rest during her pregnancy.
I texted my wife:
“I found a housemaid already. She seems pretty good.”
Anna replied briefly:
“Okay.”
I assumed she was tired and didn’t want to talk much.
The next day Anna returned home.
When she first saw Grace, she paused for a second.
Just a very brief second.
Then she smiled politely.
“Hello.”
Grace nodded.
“Hello, Mrs. Anna.”
Nothing seemed unusual.
I didn’t think much of it.
Over the next few days, Grace worked diligently. The house was always clean and tidy, and meals were prepared neatly.
I began to think I had hired the right person.
But on the third night, something strange happened.
Around 2 a.m., I suddenly woke up.
Maybe because I was thirsty.
I reached my hand across the bed.
The bed was empty.
Anna wasn’t there.
I assumed she had gone downstairs to drink some water.
I got up and walked into the hallway.
The house was quiet.
Only a dim light from downstairs illuminated the staircase.
I walked down.
As I passed by Grace’s room on the ground floor, I suddenly heard someone crying softly.
I stopped.
It was Anna’s voice.
I felt confused.
Why would my wife be in the maid’s room in the middle of the night?
The door wasn’t completely closed.
There was a small gap.
I looked through it.
And the sight in front of me made me freeze in shock.
Anna was kneeling on the floor.
Right in front of Grace.
In her hands was a stack of money.
Anna was crying.
“Please… keep this secret for me.”
Her voice trembled.
“My husband and I are very happy now… and we’re about to welcome our first baby.”
She choked back tears.
“The past is over… I regret it so much… please.”
I stood there outside the door, completely stunned.
Grace looked at Anna for a long moment.
Finally, she nodded.
“Alright,” Grace said slowly.
“I won’t tell your husband.”
Anna let out a breath of relief.
She placed the stack of money on the table.
I caught a glimpse of it.
About $1,200.
Then Anna wiped her tears and stood up.
I quickly turned and walked back upstairs before she could leave the room.
When Anna returned to the bedroom, I pretended to be asleep.
But that night… I never fell asleep again.
One question kept repeating in my mind:
What secret was my wife hiding from me?
The next morning, Anna behaved completely normally.
She even made breakfast for me.
If I hadn’t seen what happened the night before, I might never have suspected anything.
But I had seen it.
And I couldn’t forget it.
Two days later, when Anna went to a prenatal checkup with her mother, I stayed home.
Grace was cleaning the kitchen.
I walked over.
“Grace,” I said.
She turned around.
“I need to ask you something.”
She nodded.
“Yes?”
I looked directly into her eyes.
“That night… what was my wife talking to you about?”
Grace immediately went silent.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I took out my wallet.
Placed $2,400 on the table.
“How much did my wife give you to keep quiet?”
Grace looked at the money.
After a moment, she sighed.
“She gave me about $1,200.”
I pushed the money toward her.
“I’ll give you $2,400.”
“Just tell me the truth.”
Grace looked at me.
Her eyes hesitated for a few seconds.
Then she said something that made my heart drop.
“Do you really want to know?”
I nodded.
Grace spoke slowly.
“I used to work as a maid for another family.”
“And I saw your wife there.”
I frowned.
“There?”
Grace nodded.
“Your wife used to have an affair with the man who owned that house.”
“He was already married.”
My head started buzzing.
Grace continued:
“They met whenever his wife was away.”
“I saw them hugging… even going into the bedroom together.”
“Your wife worked under him at the company.”
“I heard she wanted his support for a promotion.”
I stood there, unable to move.
Everything felt like it was spinning.
Grace spoke softly.
“After a while… she quit that company.”
“Probably because the affair was discovered.”
“I never expected to see her again… in your house.”
The kitchen fell silent.
I couldn’t say a word.
Grace picked up the money.
“I’ve told you the truth.”
I nodded slowly.
“You can leave your job.”
Grace looked at me.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
That afternoon, Grace left the house.
The house suddenly felt strangely quiet.
That evening, Anna came home.
She smiled.
“The doctor said the baby and I are both healthy.”
I looked at my wife.
The woman I loved.
The woman carrying my child.
But in my mind, I kept seeing the image of her kneeling in front of Grace, begging her to keep a secret.
A secret about her past that I had never known.
Anna walked over and hugged me.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
I stayed silent.
And in my heart, a painful question slowly appeared.
Could I still love my wife the same way… now that I knew the truth?
