It was already midnight, and my husband still hadn’t come home.
The clock on the living room wall had just struck twelve.
The minute hand slid past the number slowly, making a soft tick… tick… that echoed through the quiet house.
I sat on the sofa, holding a cup of coffee that had gone cold a long time ago. The dim yellow light cast long shadows across the walls, making the room feel strangely empty.
My husband still wasn’t home.
His name was Daniel Carter.
We had been married for eight years and lived in a small suburban house outside Chicago. Daniel worked as a financial manager at a large real estate company called Hamilton & Pierce, while I worked as a freelance graphic designer, which meant I usually worked from home.
Normally, Daniel came back around 7 p.m. If he had a late meeting or a client dinner, he would always send a message or call to let me know.
But tonight, there was nothing.
I had called him three times.
No answer.
The message I sent at 9:40 p.m. still showed only “delivered.”
A strange uneasiness slowly crept into my chest.
At first, I tried to calm myself.
Maybe he was in a meeting.
Maybe his phone battery had died.
But when the clock showed 11:30 p.m., the worry had already turned into something darker.
Daniel had never disappeared like this before.
I stood up and walked to the window.
The street outside was completely empty.
Only the streetlights illuminated the thin layer of snow left from last week’s storm.
A cold wind blew past, shaking the branches of the trees.
I looked back at my phone.
Still nothing.
No calls.
No messages.
My heartbeat quickened.
Finally, I grabbed my coat.
“I’ll just go to his office,” I muttered to myself.
Hamilton & Pierce was about 25 minutes away by car.
If Daniel was still there, at least I would know he was safe.
I grabbed my car keys and stepped outside.
The highway was almost empty at this hour.
My headlights cut through the dark road ahead.
Questions kept running through my mind.
What was Daniel doing?
Why wasn’t he answering?
Why hadn’t he called?
I tried to push away the worst thoughts.
Daniel wasn’t irresponsible.
At least… he hadn’t been before.
But over the past few months, he had changed.
He often came home later.
His phone was always placed face down on the table.
Sometimes he would step onto the balcony to take certain calls.
Once I asked him,
“Work getting stressful lately?”
Daniel just smiled.
“Yeah. The real estate market is crazy right now.”
I believed him.
Or at least, I wanted to.
When I arrived at the Hamilton & Pierce building, the dashboard clock read 12:27 a.m.
The parking lot was nearly empty.
Only a few cars were scattered under the dim yellow lights.
My heart tightened when I recognized Daniel’s gray BMW still parked there.
So he was still inside.
I felt a small wave of relief… but also confusion.
If he was working, why hadn’t he answered the phone?
Most of the building lights were off.
Only a few floors were still lit.
Luckily, Daniel had 24/7 access, and I had a spare key card in my wallet.
Back then, we thought it was convenient.
Now it made me uneasy.
I stepped into the lobby.
No security guard.
Just the quiet hum of the air conditioning and cold white lights.
The elevator doors opened with a soft ding.
I pressed 15.
That was Daniel’s floor.
The doors slid open.
A long hallway stretched ahead, brightly lit but completely empty.
The sound of my heels echoed against the marble floor.
Daniel’s office was at the very end of the corridor.
The frosted glass door was closed.
But the lights inside were on.
At first, I was about to knock.
But when I got close to the glass…
I saw something that made my entire body freeze.
On the cream-colored sofa inside the office…
Daniel was lying there.
But he wasn’t alone.
Next to him was a blonde woman.
She wore a tight office dress.
Her high heels were tossed on the floor.
Her head rested against Daniel’s shoulder.
Both of them were asleep.
Very close.
Too close.
I recognized her instantly.
Ashley Monroe.
Daniel’s secretary.
A 26-year-old woman who had joined the company about a year ago.
Beautiful.
Confident.
And always smiling whenever I met her.
The office door wasn’t locked.
I pushed it open.
The hinge made a faint creaking sound.
Daniel stirred slightly.
Ashley’s eyes opened.
The moment she saw me…
Her face turned pale.
“Oh God…!”
She jumped up.
Daniel woke up too.
“Emily…?”
He stared at me as if he had just seen a ghost.
The room fell into a heavy silence.
My throat felt dry.
“What are you doing?”
My voice was so quiet that I barely recognized it myself.
Daniel quickly stood up.
“Emily, listen, I can explain—”
I laughed.
A cold, bitter laugh.
“Explain?”
My eyes moved to the sofa.
Daniel’s jacket was on the floor.
A thin blanket covered both of them.
“I think this scene is pretty clear already.”
Ashley stammered,
“No… it’s not what you think…”
I turned to her.
“Then what should I think?”
She fell silent.
Daniel stepped closer to me.
“Emily, we were just sleeping. We’ve been working all night—”
“All night… on the sofa?”
I stared directly into his eyes.
“Phones off?”
“Not answering calls?”
Daniel said nothing.
My heart ached sharply.
Eight years of marriage.
Eight years.
And this was the scene in front of me.
I turned toward the door.
“Fine.”
Daniel called after me.
“Emily, wait—”
But I had already walked out.
I drove home almost completely numb.
My mind was blank.
I didn’t cry.
I didn’t scream.
There was only a cold emptiness inside my chest.
Around 1:20 a.m., Daniel called.
I didn’t answer.
He called again.
Then sent messages.
Emily, I swear it’s not what you think.
Please let me explain.
I turned off my phone.
The next morning.
I woke up at 7 a.m.
Daniel hadn’t come home.
On the kitchen table was an envelope.
I frowned.
My name was written on it.
Daniel’s handwriting.
I opened it.
Inside was a bank statement.
And a piece of paper.
Daniel had written:
Emily.
If you’re reading this, it means you saw everything.
But you have to believe me.
I’m not cheating on you.
Ashley has been helping me investigate something.
And the person we’re investigating… is my own company.
I froze.
I kept reading.
Hamilton & Pierce is laundering money.
More than four million dollars has disappeared from investment funds.
I discovered it three months ago.
Ashley is the only person I trust.
We’ve been gathering evidence.
That’s why I couldn’t tell you.
And last night…
We had been working for eighteen hours straight.
I swear to you.
There is nothing between me and Ashley.
Daniel.
My hands started trembling.
Four million dollars?
Money laundering?
An investigation?
Before I could even process it, the doorbell rang.
Ding dong.
I walked to the door and opened it.
Two men stood outside.
Black coats.
Badges on their chests.
One of them spoke.
“Mrs. Carter?”
I nodded.
He showed his badge.
“FBI.”
My heart dropped.
“We need to talk to you about your husband.”
I swallowed.
“Daniel…?”
The man looked at me seriously.
“Your husband was arrested an hour ago.”
“Arrested?”
I shook my head.
“No… that’s impossible…”
The other agent said,
“We have evidence linking him to the embezzlement of four million dollars from Hamilton & Pierce.”
The paper slipped from my hands onto the floor.
My head spun.
Daniel said he was investigating.
The FBI said he was the criminal.
So…
Who was telling the truth?
And right at that moment…
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
From Ashley Monroe.
Only one line.
Emily.
If you want to know the truth…
Don’t trust the FBI.
