Three Years Later, He Paid the Price
My name is Emily Carter.
Three years ago, I signed the divorce papers my husband forced in front of me… while I was two months pregnant with his child.
And he never knew.
1
It was raining heavily that night.
I was sitting on the sofa in our small apartment in Chicago, holding a warm cup of ginger tea with both hands. Outside the window, the yellow streetlights blurred into long streaks through the rain.
I was pregnant.
Two months.
The doctor had just confirmed it that afternoon.
I held the ultrasound photo in my hands the entire way home. My heart was beating fast with excitement and happiness.
I had imagined telling my husband the news — Daniel Carter.
We had been married for four years. Daniel always said he wanted children.
I thought… he would be happy.
But everything changed at 9 p.m. that night.
The apartment door opened.
Daniel walked in.
A strange woman’s perfume drifted into the room with him.
I froze.
“You’re home,” I said quietly.
Daniel didn’t look at me.
He took off his coat, tossed his keys onto the table, and said something that shattered my world.
“Emily… we need to talk.”
His voice was cold.
I suddenly had a terrible feeling.
“What’s wrong?”
Daniel pulled a stack of papers out of his bag.
He placed them on the table.
I looked down and saw the title.
DIVORCE AGREEMENT
My throat went dry.
“Are… are you joking?”
Daniel looked straight into my eyes.
“I don’t love you anymore.”
All the sound in the room disappeared.
“What… are you saying?”
Daniel sighed.
“I met someone else.”
My heart felt like it was being crushed.
“Who?”
Daniel stayed silent for a few seconds.
“Her name is Sophia.”
Sophia.
That name felt like a knife.
“We’ve been seeing each other for eight months.”
Eight months.
Eight months.
Eight months while I was still cooking dinner for him every night.
Still washing his clothes.
Still waiting for him to come home.
My voice trembled.
“Daniel… we’re married.”
He shrugged.
“So what?”
Tears rolled down my face.
“You’re destroying our family.”
Daniel replied coldly.
“No.”
“This family has been dead for a long time.”
2
I stared at the divorce papers on the table.
“I… won’t sign.”
Daniel scoffed.
“Emily, don’t make this harder than it has to be.”
“Sophia and I are going to get married.”
Those words hit me like a hammer.
“You cheated on me… and now you’re forcing me to divorce you?”
Daniel shrugged again.
“Don’t make it dramatic.”
I bit my lip.
“Daniel… I love you.”
He gave a cold smile.
“That’s your problem.”
My hands clenched.
I wanted to tell him.
That I was pregnant.
That he was going to be a father.
But right then…
Daniel’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
A smile appeared on his face.
“Sophia is calling.”
He answered immediately.
His voice suddenly became gentle.
“Hey, babe…”
Babe.
I stood there… like a stranger in my own home.
After he hung up, Daniel looked at me again.
“Emily, just sign it.”
“I don’t want to drag this out.”
I asked quietly,
“What if I don’t?”
Daniel sighed.
“I’ll get a lawyer.”
Then he said something that made my heart sink.
“But if you sign now… I’ll leave the apartment to you.”
The apartment was worth $220,000.
I looked at him.
So in his eyes…
Our four-year marriage was worth that much.
One apartment.
One piece of paper.
One signature.
3
I sat down slowly.
Daniel placed a pen in front of me.
“Emily, please be mature about this.”
“We’re adults.”
I looked at the paper.
If I signed…
Everything would end.
I placed my hand on my stomach.
The baby inside me…
Was his child.
Should I tell him?
Should I let him know?
But then I remembered Daniel’s cold eyes.
The perfume on his shirt.
The way he called another woman babe.
I understood something in that moment.
This man…
Didn’t deserve to be a father.
I picked up the pen.
Daniel smiled with satisfaction.
I signed my name.
Emily Carter
It took three seconds.
Four years of marriage… ended.
Daniel let out a relieved breath.
“Thank you.”
I stood up.
“You can leave.”
He looked at me.
“This is my home.”
I handed him the document.
“No.”
“Now it’s mine.”
Daniel shrugged.
“Fine.”
He packed a few things.
Before leaving, he said,
“Emily.”
I didn’t look at him.
“You’ll be fine.”
The door closed.
I slowly slid down to the floor.
Holding my stomach with both hands.
And I cried.
4
Two weeks later.
Daniel posted a photo on Instagram.
He and Sophia were standing on a beach in Miami.
She was wearing a white dress.
Daniel had his arm around her waist.
The caption said:
“Starting a new life.”
I stared at the photo for a long time.
Then I turned off my phone.
The next day, I left Chicago.
I moved to Seattle.
A city where no one knew me.
Three months later…
My son was born.
I named him Lucas.
Lucas Carter.
He had Daniel’s eyes.
But I never told anyone who his father was.
I worked two jobs.
Accountant during the day.
Barista at a café at night.
Three years passed.
Life wasn’t easy.
But I never regretted my choice.
5
Three years later.
One autumn afternoon.
Lucas was playing in the park.
“Mommy! Look!”
He ran toward me and hugged my leg.
I smiled.
“Are you having fun?”
“Yes!”
I picked him up.
At that moment…
A black Mercedes stopped in front of the park.
The car door opened.
A man stepped out.
I froze.
Daniel.
Three years… and he hadn’t changed much.
Except…
He looked more tired.
Daniel stared at me.
His eyes filled with shock.
“Emily?”
Then he looked at Lucas.
The little boy in my arms.
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“…Is that…?”
I held Lucas closer.
Three years ago…
He abandoned me.
Three years later…
He came back.
But this time…
Everything was different.
And Daniel Carter…
Was about to face the ending he truly deserved.
