THE NIGHT IN THE NURSERY

I never thought that a piece of footage from the nursery camera could turn my entire life upside down.

My name is Sarah Mitchell. I live with my husband, Michael Mitchell, in a two-story house in the suburbs of Seattle. Three years ago, we bought the house for nearly $650,000, when Michael’s job at a growing tech company was doing very well.

Two months ago, I gave birth to twin boys.

We named them Ethan and Evan.

The two babies look almost exactly alike. The same soft brown hair, the same round eyes, and the same strange habit: if one of them cries, the other immediately starts crying too.

The first few weeks after they were born were the most exhausting time of my life.

The babies took turns waking up at night. I rarely slept more than two hours at a time.

Michael had to return to work after only three weeks of leave.

Finally, we decided to hire a night nanny.

That’s when Lily Parker appeared.

Lily was about twenty-six years old. She had light blonde hair, a gentle voice, and a smile that made her seem very trustworthy.

She said she had worked as a nanny for several families in the area.

She even gave me a few phone numbers for references.

I called two of them.

Both said Lily was wonderful.

Michael agreed as well.

We both need some sleep, Sarah,” he said, looking at the dark circles under my eyes.

So Lily started working for us.

Her job was simple: she arrived at 9 p.m., stayed in the nursery overnight, fed the babies when they woke up, changed their diapers, and helped them fall asleep again.

We paid her $25 an hour.

The first night went smoothly.

The second night too.

But by the fourth night, I started to feel that something wasn’t right.

Around 2 a.m., I woke up to the sound of crying.

Not just one baby.

Both of them.

Ethan and Evan were crying intensely, as if something had frightened them.

I was about to run to the nursery when Michael held my arm.

Lily is there,” he whispered.

Let her handle it.”

But the crying continued for nearly twenty minutes.

Eventually, I went downstairs anyway.

When I opened the nursery door, Lily was holding Ethan.

She turned around, slightly startled.

Oh… Mrs. Sarah.”

I’m trying to calm him down.”

Evan was still lying in his crib, his face red from crying.

I felt like something was off, but I didn’t say anything.

About ten minutes later, both babies fell asleep again.

I went back to bed.

But the uneasy feeling stayed with me.

The next night… the same thing happened again.

Around 1:40 a.m., both babies started crying at the same time.

Very loudly.

This time I heard Lily saying something.

But when I opened the door, she immediately stopped.

I just changed his diaper,” she said quickly.

Everything looked normal.

But a mother’s instinct told me… something wasn’t right.

The next day, I decided to check the camera in the nursery.

We had installed it when the babies were born so we could monitor them from our phones.

I opened the app.

Selected the footage from the previous night.

And started watching.

At first, everything looked normal.

Around 10 p.m., Lily was sitting on a chair next to the crib, scrolling through her phone.

The babies were sleeping peacefully.

Around 11 p.m., she stood up and changed Ethan’s diaper.

Everything looked professional.

I started to think maybe I was overreacting.

But then…

At 1:32 a.m.

Lily stood up.

She stared directly at the camera.

For a long moment.

The look in her eyes sent a chill down my spine.

Then…

She did something strange.

Lily walked up to the camera and turned it away.

My heart started pounding.

The image in the video immediately shifted to a different corner of the room.

The two cribs were no longer clearly visible.

Only part of the room remained in view.

My throat went dry.

Why would she do that?

I kept watching.

About three minutes later, I heard Ethan crying.

Then Evan started crying too.

The crying grew louder.

But Lily was nowhere in the frame.

About five minutes passed.

Then…

Lily walked back into view.

But what made my blood run cold was this—

she didn’t come from the direction of the cribs.

She walked out of the nursery closet.

I paused the video.

My heart was beating so hard I could hear it.

The closet?

What was she doing in there?

I rewound the video.

Watched it again.

Yes.

She came out of the closet.

Then quickly adjusted the camera back to its original position.

After that, she picked Ethan up and comforted him.

I sat frozen in my chair.

One question kept repeating in my mind:

Why did she go into the closet?

That evening, I told Michael.

He watched the video with me.

He frowned.

Maybe she was getting a blanket… or something.”

But I shook my head.

There’s nothing in that closet.”

We kept the babies’ things in another one.

Michael fell silent.

Finally, he said,

Tonight we watch it live.”

That evening Lily arrived as usual.

She smiled.

Good evening, Mrs. Sarah.”

The babies were very good today.”

I nodded, though suspicion filled my mind.

At exactly 1:30 a.m., Michael and I opened the camera app.

We stared at the phone screen.

Lily was sitting in the chair.

The babies were sleeping.

Then…

She stood up.

Looked at the camera.

Exactly the same look as in the video.

Michael tightened his grip on the phone.

Let’s see,” he whispered.

Lily walked toward the camera.

And then—

she turned it away.

I couldn’t stand it anymore.

Michael!”

He nodded.

The two of us ran out of the bedroom.

Down the stairs.

To the nursery door.

Michael pushed it open so hard it slammed against the wall.

Lily!”

The room was brightly lit.

Both babies were crying.

But Lily…

was nowhere in the room.

A chill spread through my body.

Michael looked around.

Then his eyes stopped at the closet door.

It was slightly open.

Michael walked toward it.

I stood behind him.

My heart pounding.

He pulled the door open.

And we both froze in shock.

Inside the closet…

There wasn’t a wall.

Instead, there was a small hidden door leading to the backyard.

Michael looked at me.

I’ve never seen this before.”

The old wooden door looked like it had been there for years.

Michael opened it.

Outside was a narrow path leading to the backyard.

The cold night wind rushed in.

But what terrified me even more was…

fresh footprints in the mud.

Two sets.

One belonged to Lily.

And the other… to a man.

I turned back toward the nursery.

The babies were still crying.

Michael whispered,

Someone was here.”

At that moment…

My phone vibrated.

A message.

From Lily Parker.

Only one sentence.

Don’t call the police if you want your babies to stay safe.”

My whole world collapsed.

Because at that moment I realized something horrifying.

There were two cribs.

But now…

only one baby was there.

Evan was still in his crib.

But Ethan… was gone.
