THE WEDDING NIGHT AND THE MAN UNDER THE BED
That night was supposed to be the happiest night of my life.
The night I officially became the wife of Andrew Miller — the man I had met through a matchmaking introduction. Our story wasn’t dramatic or passionate. It was calm, steady, and practical — exactly the kind of marriage I thought I wanted.
But I never imagined that just hours after changing into my wedding nightgown, stepping into our bedroom still filled with the scent of flowers and wine, I would experience a moment of terror that nearly stopped my heart.
A terror coming from… under the bed.
1. A marriage that seemed right
My name is Emily Parker. I was 28 years old then, working as an administrative assistant at a logistics company in Ohio. My life was not luxurious, but it was stable. I didn’t believe in fairy tales or love at first sight. What I wanted was simple: a kind man, an honest man, someone reliable.
Andrew appeared in my life just as I began thinking seriously about marriage.
He was introduced to me by a distant relative. From our first meeting, he seemed gentle — almost too gentle. He spoke softly, moved carefully, dressed simply, and worked as a maintenance technician for a local electric company. His income wasn’t high — about $4,200 a month — but it was steady.
He lived with his elderly mother in a small one-story house in the suburbs. His father had passed away years ago. The family situation seemed simple. I visited his home several times and met his mother, Margaret Miller, a frail woman in her seventies with a soft, kind voice.
Andrew told me he had a younger brother named Daniel, but said Daniel worked far away and rarely came home.
I never questioned it.
We dated for nearly a year. There were no big arguments, no dramatic conflicts. Andrew was patient and considerate. He wasn’t romantic, but he was attentive — buying medicine when I was sick, driving me to work on rainy days, turning down social invitations just to spend time with me.
When he proposed, I agreed without hesitation.
I truly believed I had chosen the right man.
2. The wedding night
Our wedding was small and simple, held at a neighborhood church. Most of the guests were Andrew’s coworkers and old friends. They drank a lot — especially Andrew.
I felt slightly uncomfortable but told myself it was understandable. After all, it was his wedding day.
That night, I went to the bedroom first. The room was neat and quiet. A solid oak bed stood in the center, covered with brand-new cream-colored sheets.
I sat on the bed, removing my jewelry, feeling shy and nervous. The laughter and voices outside gradually faded.
Around 11 p.m., the door opened. Andrew stumbled in, clearly drunk. He didn’t say a word — just collapsed onto the bed and fell asleep instantly.
I sighed, covered him with a blanket, and stood up to go to the bathroom.
That was when I heard it.
A faint rustling sound.
3. Something under the bed
At first, I thought I was imagining it.
But the sound came again — soft, slow, unsettling. Like fingernails scraping against the floor. Or someone shifting their body.
My heart began to pound.
The room was completely silent except for Andrew’s breathing.
Then again — rustle… scratch…
The sound was coming from under the bed.
I tried to calm myself. Maybe it’s a dog or a cat, I thought. But I had never seen any pets in the house.
Slowly, I knelt down. My hands were trembling as I lifted the edge of the bedsheet.
What I saw made me scream.
4. Eyes in the darkness
From beneath the bed, a pair of glowing eyes stared straight at me.
They were not animal eyes.
They were human eyes.
I screamed and fell backward onto the floor, shaking uncontrollably. My whole body went cold.
“Andrew! Wake up!” I cried, shaking him violently.
He groaned, half-asleep.
“What’s wrong?” he muttered.
“There’s… there’s someone under the bed!” I shouted.
Andrew froze for a moment.
What terrified me more than the situation itself was his expression.
He was calm. Too calm.
5. The man under the bed
Andrew sat up, rubbed his face, then bent down.
“Come out, Daniel.”
I felt my blood turn cold.
A thin hand appeared first. Then a man slowly crawled out from under the bed.
He was about the same height and age as Andrew, with similar facial features. But his eyes were empty, unfocused. He smiled awkwardly, childlike and confused.
He clutched an old teddy bear and crouched on the floor, frightened by the light.
I couldn’t speak.
“Who… who is that?” I whispered.
Andrew sighed deeply.
“That’s my younger brother. Daniel.”
6. The truth revealed
Andrew sat beside me and finally told the truth.
Daniel had been intellectually disabled since birth. Doctors said it was due to complications during delivery. Though Daniel was only two years younger than Andrew, his mind was no more developed than that of a young child.
I stared at Daniel as he hummed a children’s song, completely unaware of the chaos around him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, my voice shaking.
Andrew lowered his head.
“I was afraid you wouldn’t marry me.”
For an entire year, they had hidden Daniel from me. Whenever I visited, he was kept in a locked room. On the wedding day, they locked the door again — but no one expected Daniel to escape and hide under our bed.
Andrew was the only provider. His mother was old. His brother would never be able to live independently.
He knew the truth might cost him his marriage.
7. Despair on the wedding night
I sat there in my white nightgown, tears streaming down my face.
I wasn’t afraid of Daniel.
I was afraid of my future.
Andrew and I earned about $8,000 a month combined. After expenses, medical bills, and caring for his mother, there was barely anything left. If we had to care for Daniel for life, what would happen to my dreams? My children? My freedom?
“I’m sorry,” Andrew said softly.
“But I can’t abandon my brother.”
I looked at the man I had just married.
And for the first time, I understood what it meant to be betrayed by someone kind.
That night, I didn’t sleep at all.
8. A choice at dawn
The next morning, sunlight filled the room. Daniel had been taken back to his room. Andrew sat silently at the table, a cold cup of coffee in front of him.
I looked at him, my heart torn apart.
Between his duty to his family
and my right to choose my own life.
The wedding night was over.
But the nightmare…
had only just begun.
