I had been married to my husband, Daniel, for two years.
We lived with his father, Richard, in a quiet suburban house. Daniel’s older brother had already moved out with his own family, so it was just the three of us—until recently, when I gave birth to our first child.
Daniel’s mother had passed away many years ago. Since then, Richard had never remarried. He spent his life working tirelessly, raising his two sons alone, putting them through college, and making sure they had stable futures.
Even after both sons got married, he chose to live quietly, alone in his own space.
Daniel and I had suggested many times that he should find someone—someone to keep him company, someone who could care for him. But he would always shake his head with a gentle smile.
“I’m too old,” he’d say. “I don’t want to burden anyone.”
We respected him deeply and did everything we could to take care of him.
After our baby was born, everything changed.
It was our first child, and we were completely overwhelmed. My parents lived far away and couldn’t come to help. Daniel’s brother had his hands full with his own kids.
For the first two weeks, Daniel and I barely slept. We took turns staying up all night, feeding the baby, calming her cries, trying to figure out what we were doing.
Eventually, things stabilized a little—but not enough.
Before the baby, Daniel and I used to split the housework evenly. Now, that was impossible. I couldn’t handle everything, and I didn’t want Daniel to carry the entire burden alone.
So we decided to hire a housekeeper.
The agency introduced us to a woman named Emily, in her early 30s. She seemed capable, neat, and honest. I trusted her almost immediately.
She handled cooking, cleaning, and occasionally checked in on Richard—something I was grateful for, since we barely had time to sit down, let alone properly care for him like before.
Then one night, everything changed.
After finally putting the baby to sleep, I went downstairs to get some water. As I reached the staircase and glanced toward the living room—
I froze.
Emily was quietly walking into my father-in-law’s bedroom.
I frowned, confused.
Maybe she was just checking on him, I thought.
But when I returned to bed… she still hadn’t come out.
The next night, I saw it again.
And then again.
By the third time, a cold, uncomfortable thought crept into my mind.
What if… something inappropriate was going on?
I hated myself for thinking it—but I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
One night, when I saw Emily slip into his room again, I decided to follow her.
My heart pounded as I crept down the hallway. The door was slightly ajar.
I held my breath… and peeked through the narrow gap.
And then—
I nearly collapsed.
Inside, Emily was standing behind Richard… gently massaging his back.
My shock made me stumble slightly, and I accidentally made a noise.
Both of them turned toward the door immediately.
Their faces filled with awkwardness.
I panicked and quickly said, “I—I was just getting some water… I didn’t mean to—”
I couldn’t even finish my sentence.
A few minutes later, Emily came out and approached me.
I felt embarrassed—but strangely, also relieved.
I had already decided in my mind: if Richard had found someone he cared about, someone who could take care of him… I would support it wholeheartedly.
But what Emily said next completely shattered me.
“Mr. Richard has had back pain for over a week now,” she said softly. “It’s been getting worse, but he didn’t want you or Daniel to know.”
I stared at her, stunned.
“He asked me to come in at night to massage his back… secretly,” she continued. “He said you two are already exhausted taking care of the baby. He didn’t want to add to your burden.”
My chest tightened.
“He even said…” Emily hesitated, then continued, “…that he feels useless. That he can’t help his children anymore, and now that he’s old, he’s just becoming a problem.”
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
I felt like something was crushing my heart.
All this time… while we were busy adjusting to our new life, he had been suffering silently—right under the same roof.
And we didn’t notice.
The next morning, Daniel and I immediately took him to the doctor.
That was when we found out the truth:
He had spinal degeneration.
A condition that had likely been developing for years.
Daniel blamed himself.
I blamed myself even more.
We thought we were being good children… but we had missed something so important.
Now, I keep asking myself:
Should we hire a personal caregiver just for him?
But I already know the answer he’ll give.
He’ll refuse.
He’ll say he doesn’t want to be a burden.
So what should I do?
How do you take care of someone… who has spent their whole life refusing to trouble others—even when they’re in pain?
