I had been divorced for seven months when I heard that my ex-wife had given birth to a child who looked exactly like me. I was shocked. At first, I thought there had been a mistake. Curious and concerned, I found an excuse to call her and check. She initially denied it, saying that people were spreading rumors. But the information came from a neighbor who worked in the maternity ward and had even seen her in the delivery room. Even my ex-wife found it strange since we had only been divorced for a short time, so she reluctantly confirmed the news.
After some back-and-forth, she admitted that she had given birth—but insisted the child wasn’t mine. I couldn’t believe it. I thought she might be avoiding me, so I assumed she was lying. We had only been divorced for seven months; if the baby wasn’t mine, whose could it be? Even though we had used protection, there’s always a small risk.
I was angry at my ex-wife. No matter how she felt about me, the child hadn’t done anything wrong. If she chose to bring the baby into the world, I had a responsibility as a father. The child deserved a father, and I couldn’t let my own child grow up without knowing me.
Determined to do the right thing, I went to her house to claim my child. She had no right to hide the birth from me. I had never abandoned my child and had no knowledge of the baby’s existence. When she saw me arrive, she looked sad and sighed:
“I wish it were your child,” she said, “but I can’t lie to you anymore. This baby… truly isn’t yours.”
I stared at the ten-day-old baby boy, who resembled me so closely it was uncanny. I couldn’t believe her words. Anyone could see the resemblance.
Anger surged through me at her coldness and lack of consideration. Finally, she looked down and revealed an earth-shattering secret:
“He… is Tuan’s child.”
I froze. Tuan is my younger brother. We are two years apart but look very much alike. That explained perfectly why the newborn looked so much like me.
My ex-wife and I had been married for just one year before she filed for divorce, claiming we weren’t compatible and life together felt suffocating. Around that time, Tuan had moved north for work. I had often asked him why he would leave a good job there to move so far away. Now I understood—he must have had a relationship with my ex-wife and left because of guilt.
My ex-wife explained that since Tuan left, she had felt regret and wanted to make amends, but she ended up pregnant. She was certain the child was Tuan’s because we had consistently used protection throughout our short marriage. She couldn’t terminate her own child, and she couldn’t deceive me for life either. That’s why she chose divorce—to ensure mother and child would no longer be entangled with our family.
Finally, she begged me not to tell Tuan. She knew his involvement was temporary and casual. If the truth got out, she wouldn’t be able to face her own family.
Seeing her situation, I felt a mixture of anger, frustration, and compassion. I couldn’t hate the baby—after all, it was innocent and, in a way, my nephew. But I also knew that revealing the truth would create chaos for my ex-wife. I was left wondering: how could I protect the child and family without destroying everything?
