New details have emerged in the fatal rope-jumping tragedy that killed 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas in Brazil, including the account of an off-duty nurse who was waiting in line behind her.
Rayza Gabrieli Dias Delfino, 26, told police she rushed down from the bridge moments after Maria was thrown and immediately began giving first aid.
According to Brazilian outlet G1, Delfino said Maria still had a faint pulse when she reached her.
“She was giving that post-death sigh,” Delfino reportedly said in her police statement. “I picked her up, checked, and she had a very weak pulse. I started CPR and it stopped.”
Delfino, who said she would have been the 42nd person to jump that day, continued trying to revive Maria until paramedics arrived.
She told investigators that Maria had a safety harness around her abdomen, but the main rope was allegedly not attached. Emergency crews later had to cut through the equipment in an attempt to use a defibrillator, but they were unable to save her.
Before the incident, Delfino had filmed Maria preparing for the jump while waiting for her own turn.
“I was going to send it to my aunt,” she said. “I couldn’t hear what they were saying because I was expecting to jump. I was just watching her. I didn’t even see how they put things on. When she fell, I started hearing everyone saying, ‘The rope, the rope.’”
Witness Claims Camera Was Removed From Maria’s Body
Another witness has claimed that one of the organizers removed a GoPro-style camera from Maria’s body before police arrived.
Educator Rafael Goulart told EPTV that one of the first things he remembered seeing after Maria hit the ground was an employee taking a camera from the neck strap of her body.
He said he could not tell whether the person was trying to protect the equipment or remove possible evidence.
According to Delfino, the group charged 180 Brazilian real, around $50, for the bridge jump, and an additional 110 real, around $37, for a GoPro recording service.
She also told police that when she reached Maria, two people connected to the company were already at the scene.
Authorities have since said they were unable to find the camera believed to have recorded Maria’s fatal jump.
São Paulo police chief Andréa Dantas Levy told G1 that forensic teams searched the area but did not locate the device.
“The forensics team and I were at the site and conducted investigations, but we did not find the camera,” Levy said. “During questioning, no one could say where it was. Honestly, I believe it is no longer there. Considering the number of people who later came to the bridge looking for it, I believe that, unfortunately, someone may have removed the camera.”
Three Instructors Face Charges
Six people were initially arrested after the incident, but three were later released.
The three men still facing charges are Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42. They are facing charges of homicide with eventual intent, a legal classification similar to reckless indifference.
Authorities allege the instructors changed their clothes and fled toward a wooded area after the fall. They were arrested shortly afterward near the Ponte do Esqueleto trail with the help of a police helicopter.
The men are now being held in preventive detention following a court hearing on Sunday.
Judge Paulo Henrique Stahlberg Natal of the Criminal Court of Limeira reportedly ruled that the men may have attempted to flee and could interfere with the investigation if released.
According to Globo, the judge pointed to several factors, including the death of a young victim in avoidable circumstances, alleged gross negligence during a high-risk paid activity, the alleged failure to use essential safety equipment, the victim’s trust in the organizers, and the alleged attempt to flee and change clothing after the incident.
The judge also said the risk of repeated dangerous conduct was real if the suspects were allowed to remain free.
Police chief Levy told Globo that the bridge had already been connected to several previous tragedies, including a cyclist who fell while taking a selfie, suicides, and other failed bridge jumps.
However, Levy stressed that the circumstances of Maria’s death were unprecedented.
Instructors Reportedly Could Not Explain Missing Rope
During questioning, the three instructors reportedly appeared confused and were unable to explain why the main rope had not been connected to Maria.
According to G1, they could not clearly say who was responsible for attaching the rope or why a final inspection was not performed before the jump.
The men have denied changing clothes or trying to flee, saying they stayed at the location.
Cintra reportedly told the court that he did not know why Maria was not connected to the rope.
“Usually it’s Egoroff who puts on the rope,” he reportedly said. “In 99 percent of cases, and I assist with the operation. I participate in the check, I call the person, I check the helmet. But in her case, I don’t remember. I don’t remember.”
“The Rope, People, The Rope!”
Maria, from Jandira near São Paulo, died after being thrown from the popular Skeleton Bridge rope-jumping site in Limeira on Saturday.
Footage circulating online reportedly shows her being carried in a Superman-style position by two workers before being released from the bridge, about 40 meters above the ground.
Seconds after she was thrown, voices in the background can allegedly be heard shouting: “The rope, people, the rope!”
Maria suffered multiple fractures and was pronounced dead at the scene by firefighters and paramedics.
Her mother later shared a heartbreaking tribute on social media, saying she wished she could hug her daughter “a thousand times.”
“Thank you so much for being a part of my life for these 21 years,” she wrote. “What an honour it was to hear you call me mum.”
Maria often posted photos of outdoor activities and nature on social media. She had a degree in physical education and sports management and was a supporter of Santos Football Club.
Just hours before the tragedy, she had posted excitedly about the upcoming jump.
In a series of stories, she showed the location of the activity, her identification bracelets, and images of company representatives who would later be connected to the fatal incident.
In one chilling post beside a banner for “Entre Cordas,” she wrote: “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?”
Informal Rope-Jumping Groups Under Investigation
Unlike bungee jumping, which uses an elastic cord that causes the jumper to bounce, rope jumping uses climbing-style rope to stop the fall and swing the participant like a pendulum.
The staff seen in the images and videos appeared to be wearing shirts from “Entre Cordas” and “Ih Voei.”
Police said the names are not official companies, but informal rope-jumping groups that had reportedly been organizing events at different locations for about a year.
Local authorities in Limeira have also said they plan to take legal action against the federal government, arguing that inspection, maintenance, and access control for the bridge fall under federal responsibility.
Maria’s death has now become a national controversy in Brazil, with many asking how a paid high-risk activity could allow a participant to be released from a 40-meter bridge without the main safety rope attached.
The investigation remains ongoing.
