I spent ten years turning my family’s business into a $50 million empire. Then, at my dad’s birthday party, my own sister called me worthless — and my father agreed. The next morning, they learned exactly who had been holding the company together….
Chapter 1: A Royal Feast and Shattered Masks
The crystal chandeliers from the high ceiling of the Grand Corinthian Hotel cast a magnificent glow, reflecting off the expensive champagne glasses. Today was the grand celebration of Leonard Vance’s sixtieth birthday – the founder of the Vance Group, a textile and retail conglomerate. The entire hall was filled with the laughter and chatter of the elite, politicians, and prominent investors.
At the center of attention was Leonard, the man with silver-tinged temples in a perfectly tailored Brioni suit, and beside him was Chloe, his youngest daughter, who had just returned from London with a Master of Business Administration degree with honors.
And I, Adrian Vance, stood in a secluded corner near the stage, holding a stack of second-quarter sales reports.
For the past ten years, since my mother’s death, I’ve buried my youth in damp suburban workshops, sleepless nights negotiating with European partners, and time-traveling flights to save Vance Group from bankruptcy. I took over the company when it was just a heavily indebted family business worth less than $2 million. With sweat, tears, and even stomach aches that nearly caused bleeding, I transformed it into a $50 million empire, possessing a proprietary supply chain and a state-of-the-art automated distribution system.
“Distinguished guests,” Chloe’s voice boomed through the high-end loudspeakers, interrupting my thoughts. She stepped onto the stage, her face radiant and full of pride. “Today, on my father’s birthday, I am pleased to announce some good news. Starting tomorrow, I will officially take over as CEO of Vance Group, leading the corporation into the era of global digitalization!”
The applause was deafening. I froze. The CEO position? That was the chair I’d held for the past five years, built on actual business results. Why would my father agree to give it to a daughter who had never experienced the harsh realities of the business world?
I hurried up the aisle, trying to keep my voice calm: “Father, what’s going on? We never discussed any senior management changes at the Board meeting.”
Chloe turned to look at me, the smile on her face vanishing, replaced by a look of blatant contempt. He didn’t bother lowering the microphone, letting the entire audience hear his words:
“Discuss with you, Adrian? You’re just a lucky tailor who knows how to manage a factory. For the past ten years, you’ve managed the company in the same old, outdated way, turning Vance Group into a decaying, aging shell. You have no vision, no connections to the upper class; apart from burying your face in piles of data, you’re worthless. To put it bluntly, you’re completely worthless to this corporation’s $100 million future!”
The entire auditorium fell silent. I was stunned, feeling as if a bucket of ice water had been thrown in my face. I turned to look at my father, hoping he would stand up and say a word of justice for his son who had sacrificed his youth for him.
But Leonard Vance just looked at me coldly, took a sip of wine, and said indifferently:
“Chloe is right, Adrian. You’ve reached your limit. Hand over all the seals, accounting systems, and supply chains to your sister tomorrow morning. You can keep a technical consultant position at the old garment factory. This corporation needs a leader of class, not a warehouse manager.”
Laughter erupted from the tables below. The shareholders, who just a week ago had been groveling and begging me to approve the contract, now turned away, siding with the new power grabber.
I looked deep into my father’s eyes, seeing the greed and selfishness of someone wanting to get rid of his uncooperative son to pave the way for his beloved daughter. I took a deep breath, nodded, and gave a strangely relieved smile.
“Okay, if that’s what you and Chloe want.”
Chapter 2: The Morning of Collapse
Eight o’clock the next morning.
Chloe walked into the CEO’s office on the 42nd floor of the financial district, dressed in a trendy Chanel outfit. Following her was my father, Leonard, who was gleefully anticipating a new era for the Vance family.
“Where’s that good-for-nothing?” Chloe asked the secretary.
“Reporting to the new CEO, Adrian arrived at five o’clock this morning, packed all his personal belongings into a cardboard box, and left,” the secretary replied tremblingly.
“Hmph, leaving early is better than being an eyesore,” Chloe walked to her desk, flipping through the handover file—a single blank page with my signature. “Look, Dad, even the handover file was done carelessly. He’s truly uneducated.”
Leonard chuckled, patting his daughter on the shoulder: “From now on, the company is yours. Call our biggest partner – Richard Sterling’s perpetual livestock textile corporation. We need to renew our $20 million supply contract this week.”
Chloe confidently picked up the phone and dialed Sterling’s VIP landline. But the voice on the other end wasn’t the billionaire’s, but his chief auditor’s secretary.
“Excuse me, is this the new representative from Vance?”
“The Group?” The secretary’s voice was cold. “Mr. Sterling has a message: The exclusive supply contract between the two parties officially terminates as of 8 AM today.”
Chloe’s face turned pale, the phone almost falling from her hand. “What? Why? We always paid on time and…”
“Don’t you understand?” The secretary interrupted. “The Sterling Group signed the contract with Vance Group because of Adrian Vance. Mr. Sterling’s investment fund only trusted Adrian’s signature and personal reputation. When Adrian left, Vance Group was nothing more than a shell to us. Goodbye.”
Beep… Beep… Beep…
Chloe froze. Before she could process the shock, the office door was flung open. The Head of Human Resources and the Chief Information Officer burst in, their faces drained of color.
“Chairman! Director!” “There’s a big problem!”
“What’s all the fuss about?” Leonard slammed his hand on the table angrily.
“All twelve chief engineers of the automated production lines at the factories have submitted their resignations this morning! They say they’re from the Alpha hedge fund, and they only work under a personal dispatch contract with Adrian!”
The CFO rushed in, drenched in sweat: “The company’s bank account… the $15 million deposit account at the Royal Bank has just been frozen! The reason is that the co-owner and ultimate guarantor of that account is… Adrian Vance.” “He withdrew his legal bail!”
Chapter 3: The Climax – The Adrian Earthquake
Leonard Vance staggered back, collapsing into the leather chair. His face had aged ten years in five minutes.
“Impossible… it can’t be!” Chloe shrieked, the pride of a London Master vanishing, replaced by utter panic. “He’s just a manager!” “How could he possibly manipulate the entire system of this corporation?!”
“Don’t you two understand yet?”
A deep, familiar voice rang out from the doorway. Unbeknownst to them, my trusted secretary – whom they thought was just an ordinary receptionist – had entered, holding a stack of documents bearing the red security seals of the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
“Ten years ago, when Leonard Vance drove the company to bankruptcy with $5 million in debt, Adrian used his late mother’s entire inheritance to pay off the debt,” the secretary stated emphatically, her gaze fixed on Leonard and his son with profound contempt. “But he didn’t use the Vance Group name.” He secretly established a parent company called A.V. Holding.
She placed the documents on the table, flipping to the page with the ownership structure diagram:
“For the past ten years, all the factory land, the patent for automated weaving technology, export licenses to the US and European markets, even the ‘Vance Group’ brand that he proudly boasts about… have all been legally owned by A.V. Holding. Vance Group is essentially just a subsidiary that leases the assets and operating rights from Adrian for $1 per year.” Last night, when the two of them declared Adrian ‘worthless,’ he terminated the lease agreement.
BOOM!
The secretary’s words were like an atomic bomb leveling the luxurious office.
Chloe frantically flipped through the documents. Every line, every legal seal was crystal clear. The $50 million Vance Group that the father and son had just stolen from me… was essentially just an empty office with a few old computers and a pile of outstanding debt. All the core assets that made this empire valuable were in Adrian Vance’s pocket.
“Adrian…where is Adrian?” Leonard mumbled, his voice trembling, tears of belated regret beginning to fall. “Call him back here!” “Tell him Dad’s crazy, he was just joking at the party!”
“It’s too late, Mr. Leonard,” the secretary replied coldly. “Adrian is currently at the press conference for the new corporation.”
Chapter 4: The Twist That Turns the Tide
At the city’s international convention center, hundreds of journalists and major television reporters surrounded a magnificent stage.
I stood in the center of the stage, dressed in a stylish navy blue suit, exuding the confidence and power of a true king of the textile industry. Beside me sat billionaire Richard Sterling and representatives from the three largest investment funds in America.
The large screen behind me displayed the corporation’s new logo: A.V. Empire.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” I said loudly into the microphone. “From today onwards, my entire supply chain, automated technology system, and strategic partners will officially operate under the name A.V. Empire.” “We have received a strategic investment of $30 million from Mr. Richard Sterling to expand our market into Southeast Asia.”
In the midst of the press conference, the doors of the auditorium were suddenly pushed open.
Leonard and Chloe, disheveled and drenched in sweat, rushed in. They no longer had the elegance of the previous night’s party. Chloe was sobbing, trying to rush onto the stage, but was restrained by security.
Blocking the way, shutting them out.
“Adrian! My son!” Leonard yelled, oblivious to the hundreds of cameras watching. “You can’t do this to the family! Vance Group is my life’s work! By doing this, you’re driving me and your sister to ruin, to bankruptcy!”
I signaled the security team to step back, then calmly walked down the stage, standing opposite my greedy father and sister. Camera flashes flickered continuously, capturing this historic confrontation.
“Family, Father?” I looked at him with a calm but chilling gaze. “Last night, when Chloe called me worthless, and you nodded in agreement to kick me out of the company like a dog, did you ever think of me as family? For the past ten years, I’ve stayed up all night at the factory, while you and Chloe used the money I earned to travel Europe, buy supercars, and live a life of luxury. I never asked for a thank you; I only needed minimal respect. But you two stole even that respect.”
“Adrian… I was wrong, I’m sorry!” Chloe knelt on the floor, clinging to my trousers, sobbing hysterically. “Please come back and save the company! Without you, the bank will seize our building and mansion!”
I gently stepped back, avoiding her hand.
“Chloe, your Master’s degree is excellent, but you’ve forgotten one crucial thing in the business world: The value of a business doesn’t lie in the name on the sign, but in the person running it. You want to be the CEO, right? Then use your London Master’s degree to save that empty shell called Vance Group.”
Chapter 5: A Permanent Sentence for Greed
The press conference ended with the complete collapse of the Vance Group brand on the stock market. In just 24 hours, the group’s stock plummeted 90%, turning into worthless paper. Banks simultaneously sent ultimatums demanding the repayment of old debts without my guarantee.
One month later.
Vance Group officially declared bankruptcy. All of Leonard and Chloe’s remaining assets, including their luxurious villa and collection of supercars, were seized by the court and auctioned off to pay off debts to workers and small suppliers.
Leonard Vance, overwhelmed by shock, suffered a stroke and was confined to a hospital bed, spending his days staring blankly at the empty ceiling in regret. Chloe, his once arrogant youngest daughter, now worked the night shift at a convenience store to pay for her father’s medical bills, forever burdened by shame and the torment of her own foolishness.
I didn’t take revenge on them with violence. I took revenge on them with absolute success and cold indifference.
Chapter 6: Dawn on a New Peak
Six months after the earthquake.
On the rooftop of the new financial center, the office of the Chairman and CEO of A.V. Empire was bathed in the morning sunlight.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, looking down at the bustling city below. At this moment, A.V. Empire’s market capitalization had surpassed $80 million, becoming the new leading force in the nation’s retail industry.
“Chairman, Mr. Sterling and the European partners are all present in the meeting room,” the secretary (now Assistant to the CEO) said with a smile as she entered.
I turned around, adjusted my silver cufflinks, and broke into a serene and blissful smile. I was no longer the Adrian of the past – the one who always worked hard to earn a nod of approval from his selfish father. Now, I was myself, a self-made tycoon, standing at the top with my own two feet and my own mind.
I walked out of the room, heading towards the meeting room where new heights awaited me. The darkness of the past, the insults of that night’s party, were completely left behind, giving way to a new dawn filled with the light of freedom, justice, and lasting success.
